Victory at the Cross

There are many out there who either do not believe in the Christian Easter message or have forgotten it. As we come into the season, let me tell you this, there is good news and there is bad news. For those who believe in the secular meaning of Easter, the good news is this; bunnies do not poop out chocolate eggs and the bad news is this; too much chocolate will give you an upset tummy. I am currently on my first bag of Cadbury Easter Eggs and I can hear my own heartbeat and the heartbeats of my next-door neighbours. Did you know that chocolate contains caffeine? Did you know too much caffeine can make your eyeballs shake? Crazy isn’t it? Combine these lovely little sugar bombs with high-test energy drinks and you see the world in a whole new colour pattern. So, the good news is chocolate and the bad news is chocolate.

Let’s look at the Christian side of Easter. The Son of God, Jesus, came to earth, live among us and, over time, built many relationships. He came in the name of peace, taught us the Truth and, at the appointed time, He accepted the ruling of man, was flogged and set upon the cross where He chose to remain until His death. Mankind put Him on the cross, His love for us all kept Him there. I truly enjoyed the cartoon BC. Today I read where Peter was sitting on a hill and said, “I hate the term Good Friday”. Curls asked him why and Peter replied, “my Lord was hanged on a tree that day” Curls responds, “If you were going to be hanged on that day, and He volunteered to take your place, how would you feel?” Peter says “Good”. When Curls starts to walk away, he says, “Have a nice day”.

The good news is this, “When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” Romans 5:6-8 NLT. Some may see the death of Christ as bad news, but He knew that this day would come because it was foretold. Also foretold was that He would conquer death and rise again and that is GREAT news. Even better news, “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 NLT. So, where is the bad news? There are those who believe the only reason we celebrate at Easter is to get high on sugar and get a day off from work and they miss the Good News of the day. There is new life in the sacrifice of the Son of God and there is so much more awaiting us in Glory. That is the Victory Message! What Christ did for us was take away the fear of death and replace it with the joy of hope. So, to quote the late, great Johnny Hart “Have a nice day!”
