Victory at the Cross

There are many out there who either do not believe in the Christian Easter message or have forgotten it. As we come into the season, let me tell you this, there is good news and there is bad news. For those who believe in the secular meaning of Easter, the good news is this; bunnies do not poop out chocolate eggs and the bad news is this; too much chocolate will give you an upset tummy. I am currently on my first bag of Cadbury Easter Eggs and I can hear my own heartbeat and the heartbeats of my next-door neighbours. Did you know that chocolate contains caffeine? Did you know too much caffeine can make your eyeballs shake? Crazy isn’t it? Combine these lovely little sugar bombs with high-test energy drinks and you see the world in a whole new colour pattern. So, the good news is chocolate and the bad news is chocolate.

Let’s look at the Christian side of Easter. The Son of God, Jesus, came to earth, live among us and, over time, built many relationships. He came in the name of peace, taught us the Truth and, at the appointed time, He accepted the ruling of man, was flogged and set upon the cross where He chose to remain until His death. Mankind put Him on the cross, His love for us all kept Him there. I truly enjoyed the cartoon BC. Today I read where Peter was sitting on a hill and said, “I hate the term Good Friday”. Curls asked him why and Peter replied, “my Lord was hanged on a tree that day” Curls responds, “If you were going to be hanged on that day, and He volunteered to take your place, how would you feel?” Peter says “Good”. When Curls starts to walk away, he says, “Have a nice day”.

The good news is this, “When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” Romans 5:6-8 NLT. Some may see the death of Christ as bad news, but He knew that this day would come because it was foretold. Also foretold was that He would conquer death and rise again and that is GREAT news. Even better news, “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 NLT. So, where is the bad news? There are those who believe the only reason we celebrate at Easter is to get high on sugar and get a day off from work and they miss the Good News of the day. There is new life in the sacrifice of the Son of God and there is so much more awaiting us in Glory. That is the Victory Message! What Christ did for us was take away the fear of death and replace it with the joy of hope. So, to quote the late, great Johnny Hart “Have a nice day!”

Thursday April 1 at 7:30 pm we will be broadcasting a communion service with scripture, songs and a combined in-person (covid safe) and virtual communion. Peter's Picks

 The Perfect 7-day Diet – Peter’s Picks

‘He is Thinking of You’

Day 1: Psalm 139:15-17 – “You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!

Day 2: 1 Peter 5:7 – “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

Day 3: Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.’

Day 4: Proverbs 19:21 – “You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail.

Day 5: Psalm 40:17 – “As for me, since I am poor and needy, let the Lord keep me in his thoughts. You are my helper and my savior. O my God, do not delay.

Day 6: Psalm 40:5 – “Lord my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.

Day 7: John 14:2, 3 – “There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.

Enter The Prophesied Victory

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King

The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. A large crowd of Passover visitors took palm branches and went down the road to meet him. They shouted,

“Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hail to the King of Israel!”

Jesus found a young donkey and rode on it, fulfilling the prophecy that said:

“Don’t be afraid, people of Jerusalem. Look, your King is coming, riding on a donkey’s colt.” John 12:12-15 NLT

In 1994, Baltimore, Maryland became home to a Canadian Football League professional grid iron team. The lead up to the first game was filled with pomp and circumstance and the team went on to have a very successful year becoming the very first team outside of Canada to vie for the Grey Cup. The next year, this very same team took on the Calgary Stampeders in the final game of the season and claimed the Grey Cup setting another set of firsts; first team from the United States to take the Cup and the most successful American expansion team in the CFL’s history. They came home to great fanfare and the crowds lined the streets to welcome the champions. All hail the kings of the grid iron! There were promises of bigger and better in the future yet this was not meant to last. Three of the five southern teams dissolved and another millionaire brought an NFL team to Baltimore and the Stallions all but disappeared to become the seed for the resurrection of the Alouettes of Montreal. They went from victors to death in a matter of three short years.

Who would have predicted decades before that an American team would hoist the coveted Grey Cup on foreign soil, yet it happened and some still say they were the miracle team of the Canadian Football League? So, let’s take a look back to the first Palm Sunday. Who would have predicted that a simple man who was considered the son of a carpenter would be proclaimed by the masses as the King, the Greatest of all time and the Champion of Israel? I would suggest that hundreds of years earlier, a prophet named Zechariah declared the coming of Zion’s King and that He would enter victorious riding on the foal of a donkey (see Zech 9:9). The multitudes lined the streets, cut palm branches and laid out cloaks in His path and proudly declare with voices raised “Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hail to the King of Israel!” Many who proclaimed Him King were, just a week later, most likely the same ones who called for His death on the cross when the fear of death would take control of their fickle ways and they jumped ship to preserve their own skin. But, for that moment in time, the City of Zion declared their support for the true King and the world rejoiced.

There is a message in this for me and let me share this if I could. Christ came to this earth, He taught the nations that peace and grace of the Master rules both Heaven and Earth. When the worldly took exception to the teaching of the Son of God and had Him put to death, the King of all kings declared victory over the ways of man and over death. The grave could not hold Him, mankind could not kill Him and the bonds of our understanding could not contain His greatness. The difference between the earthly victories we celebrate and the victory in Christ; we can rest assured that victory in Jesus is forever.

This Sunday, we celebrate the victory of Christ as we remember His triumphant arrival in Jerusalem. We invite you to join us either in person (we are limited to numbers inside the building) or online. Should you wish to join us online, click on either link below to join us live:

 The Perfect 7-day Diet – Peter’s Picks

‘Walking Righteously; Morally Upright’

Day 1: 2 Corinthians 5:21 – “For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

Day 2: Philippians 3:9 – “... I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.”

Day 3: Romans 10:4 – “For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. As a result, all who believe in him are made right with God.

Day 4: Psalm 139:23, 24 – “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

Day 5: Micah 6:8 – “No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Day 6: Proverbs 2:6-11 – “For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity. He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to him. Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will find the right way to go. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy. Wise choices will watch over you. Understanding will keep you safe.

Day 7: James 1:4, 12 – “So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

Choose Wisely

As many people know, I am, and always have been, a Leafs fan. Yes, I have cheered on the Flames (Go Lanny!) but the Toronto Maple Leafs have always been my boys. For years, I have endured the taunts and the teasing about the lack of success in hoisting Lord Stanley’s Cup since 1967, been let down numerous times as they climbed their way into the elite in the early 2000’s only to fall flat in the playoffs. I adopted the motto over the past few years of “there is always next year” and started saying it around Christmas. In the world of hockey, I do take sides but when we head into the playoffs, my allegiance shifts as I cheer on the next team I “wouldn’t mind” seeing win the Cup. This is tough to do if you want to support Canadian hockey and see the Cup in Canada since there has not been a champion in this country since 1993. Also, as a bit of comedic relief, I once heard a stalwart say that he has invited the Leafs to be his pallbearers at his funeral so they could let him down one last time.

What does this have to do with our faith journey? There is such a tendency in our society to jump bandwagons. Many tend to jump from one boat to another, taking sides as the popularity swells. Now, there will be some who will take exception to this but, truth be told, we all do it. Watch the numbers grow as the tide of popularism surges and then watch as the multitudes jump ship when times get tough. There have been numerous religious organizations come and go, houses of faith surge in popularity until the shine is gone and then people are off to another bright shiny object. There are actually terms for this such as church surfing, faith shopping, religious curiosity just to name a few but, like I stated on Sunday, Jesus is not coming back to take sides, He is not coming back to endorse a particular faith group, He is coming back to take over.

You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail. Proverbs 19:21

It is so important not to lose sight of what is truly important in life. There are no “sides” when it comes to the Christian faith. There is the truth and there are the fallacies. For those thinking they are going to try to get God to say that one group is right and the others are all wrong, they are going to be disappointed. There is only one way; His way. John 14:6 states this very well: Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

We are coming into a time when the world will see the power of the Almighty and will fully realize Truth. Easter is a time to celebrate the fulfillment of God’s promise. Christ died, Christ rose and, Christ will come again. Death could not hold Him, the world could not contain Him and, in the end, He will take over once and for all.

This Sunday, we will look towards the Easter Celebration. We invite you to join us either in person (we are limited to numbers inside the building) or online. Should you wish to join us online, click on either link below to join us live:

Day 1: John 6:35 - The Provider – “Jesus replied, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’

Day 2: John 8:12 - The Truth – “Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’”

Day 3: John 10:7-9 - The Way – “... so he explained it to them: “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them. Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.

Day 4: John 10:11 - The Saviour – “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.

Day 5: John 11:25, 26 - The Sure Hope – “Jesus told her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”

Day 6: John 14:6 - The Fullness – “Jesus told him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.’

Day 7: John 15:1-5 - The Source – “’I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.’

The Perfect 7-day Diet – Peter’s Picks

‘It’s a Done Deal’

Day 1: Malachi 3:16, 17 – “Then those who feared the Lord spoke with each other, and the Lord listened to what they said. In his presence, a scroll of remembrance was written to record the names of those who feared him and always thought about the honor of his name. ‘They will be my people,’ says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. ‘On the day when I act in judgment, they will be my own special treasure. I will spare them as a father spares an obedient child.’”

Day 2: Romans 5:5, 6 – “And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.

Day 3: Proverbs 23:18 – “You will be rewarded for this; your hope will not be disappointed.”

Day 4: Romans 15:13 – I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Day 5: Lamentations 3:22-24 – “The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!’”

Day 6: Titus 1:2 – “This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God – who does not lie – promised them before the world began.

Day 7: Revelations 21:3, 4 – I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, ‘Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.’

Who Are You?

If I got a dollar for every time I got asked “what church are you a preacher at” and “what denomination is that” I would be rather well off. So often we are defined by the denomination rather than our faith walk. If we are to be truthful, when I tell people I am with the Nazarene Church, they ask “what do they believe?” I am going to say something here that may get me in trouble but I tell you the truth. I am Nazarene by membership but am Christian by faith. Over the past twenty one years, I have taught, preached and worshiped in numerous denominations and the one thing that is consistent is the Message. Some people like sports cars and others like trucks. If the vehicle gets you from point a to point b, then does the vehicle really matter? As long as Christ is at the center of the celebration, does it matter if they dance in the aisles or sit on their hands?

Who am I? Is this the question we ask ourselves or that we need to ask ourselves? Who am I? Am I a faithful follower of Christ who is transparent in my walk or do I wrap myself and the congregation in the denominational blanket and protect us all from the evils of the world? I believe we are all ambassadors of truth and must be open and honest with the world. We are the planters of seeds in our communities and must work with others to build the faith community in our society. Did you know there are no denominations in Heaven? Did you know that we are all God’s children equally? Did you know that no one denomination is absolutely perfect? Did you know that His way is perfect?

But that’s no life for you. You learned Christ! My assumption is that you have paid careful attention to him, been well instructed in the truth precisely as we have it in Jesus. Since, then, we do not have the excuse of ignorance, everything—and I do mean everything—connected with that old way of life has to go. It’s rotten through and through. Get rid of it! And then take on an entirely new way of life—a God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you. Eph 4:20-24

I am not here to glorify the message of the denomination but rather to declare the Truth to the world. My church denomination is a wonderful group and a vital part of a much bigger reality and that is the faith family of Christ. The old ways, in some cases, led to divisiveness and conflict. Let us gather in His way for it is the way of truth and perfection. So much more can and will be accomplished when we work together to declare Him King, united under one banner and calling out to the world “My God Reigns”.

This Sunday, we will look at unity under one banner, the banner of the risen Saviour. We invite you to join us either in person (we are limited to numbers inside the building) or online. Should you wish to join us online, click on either link below to join us live:

I’m Not The Person I Used To Be

I’ve heard it said, and I have also used the term “I’m not the person I used to be”. Well, none of us are. For some, that is a hard pill to swallow, and for others, it’s a profession of faith. If we just sit still and think, we can all replay bits and pieces of our life. I remember some of my first jobs, and as I roared through my twenties, I recall a short temper. Yes, most of us know everything by the age of twenty-five, right? Well as the years flew by I found myself slowly mellowing and now that I’m in my sixties, I probably have the patience of my parents.

I discovered that once I became “saved”, that is began following Christ, that I have been changed. Christ changed me. He kept knocking on a door that I never realized was closed to Him for a while. He patiently waited on the side of the door with no handle, as He does for everyone. He kept knocking in ways I did not recognize, yet He never gave up. He does that for everyone, and that includes you, who may be reading this article. He cares not about your past because He knows it anyway and is only interested in sharing your future with you.

I know these things, because it happened, and continues to happen to me every day. Some changes are subtle, and some are an epiphany. All we need to do is let Him in. Speak it, think it, or pray it. God hears you just the same. Keep it simple, just say” Lord, I need you today. I hear you knocking, and I am opening my door, please come in. It is that simple. In that instant, you will not be the same person you were before. That will be your moment, and only yours. All our moments are unique only to us because Jesus comes that way. He has no cookie cutter speeches, or sermons. He knows your name, and your unique situation, so He sweeps into your heart with that in mind. He will open you up to a world you may have never known existed. He will put people in your life that He planned, long before you were. They will be His feet on the ground, and His arms around your heart. Some will come and go, yet He will remain in all of the ones to come. He will allow you to temper your temper. He will gently massage your person, and personality. He will give you new eyes to see the world He has for you, new ears to hear Him even in your sleep time. He will give you a new heart to know empathy and compassion. He will even show you how to like, and love yourself, if you don’t right now. He sees in us, what we do not see in ourselves. He has a plan and a purpose you each of us. He also has a promise of eternity with Him if we want it.

My question to you now is this. Are you ready, willing, and open to His knocking? If the world has disabled you, He will enable you. The world has disabled a lot of people over the last year, yet He remains the same. A church building or service may have been suspended, closed, or halted, yet He is still alive in all of us. God is not dead, He’s alive, He’s real, and He’s still in control.  Do you want to be a different person a year from now? If you answered yes, then simply look up, reach up, but don’t give up. Take the hand that will lift you up, and remember the day that you became a different person than you used to be.

We Are On An Oleaginous Decent (slippery slope)

For the past few weeks I have been reading about the rise of Cancel Culture and am amazed that so many think this to be a new phenomenon. Cancel Culture is, according to Wikipedia, “a modern form of ostracism in which someone is thrust out of social or professional circles – whether it be online, on social media, or in person. Those who are subject to this ostracism are said to be "cancelled"”. Consider these words for a moment – excommunication, blacklisted, expulsion, rejection and shunning. These are practices that have been a part of life for centuries but with the world becoming so hypersensitive to things that they find displeasing and finding a worldwide voice through both social media and a news media that just loves a socially stimulating story to rally around (it does sell advertising), these stories blow up to unimaginable magnitude. In other words, if it sounds like something that the media can use to bury someone, they will and the powers that be generally cower and relent rather than lose market share. I watched a program where the host noted that over sixty percent of the population of the States are tired of Cancel Culture and are too afraid to say anything because they do not want to become the focus of this bullying. Yes, I called it bullying because that is exactly what it is.

I will admit this because it is the truth; the church, in the past and still a bit today, denied, excommunicated, and shunned so many and for that I am truly sorry because that is not the message of the Scriptures. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus says “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Christianity is supposed to be a faith of peace and love but our past has not always portrayed that outwardly. If you deny the rites and rituals of the church, you can find yourself outside looking in wondering what happened. A job interview used to include a request for a certificate of membership for a local church. What scares me the most is that there is a movement in the church to build inclusive relationships within the community while the world moves more towards judgementalism and seclusion of those who are perceived to be wrong according to their own moral stance. A friend of mine who does not profess any faith asked me what makes my ethical stance correct and in the same breath condemns my belief according to his personal preference. As soon as the words came out of his mouth, we both laughed hysterically at how quickly we both moved to shun each other’s stance.

My Lord wishes us, as followers of Christ, to build relationship, draw people into a peace community and think of others before self. We are not here to tear people down but rather build others up and support them in their lives. Come to me, all who are weary and burdened and I will be there to help, to give you rest. This should be the calling of our faith community and we should set the example for the world. If Christ calls upon the world to come to Him, should we, as His disciples, also call out to the world with this claim? Let us not follow the world as they pursue a path of self serving seclusion based judgementalism but rather die to self and serve the needs of those around us so that we, as a community, grow stronger.

Peter's Picks

The Perfect 7-day Diet – Peter’s Picks

‘The Privilege of Prayer’

Day 1: Hebrews 4:15, 16 - ALWAYS AVAILABLE – “This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”

Day 2: 1 John 5:14-16 - ASSURANCE – “And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for. If you see a fellow believer sinning in a way that does not lead to death, you should pray, and God will give that person life. But there is a sin that leads to death, and I am not saying you should pray for those who commit it.”

Day 3: 1 John 1:9 - RESTORATION – “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

Day 4: 2 Chronicles 7:14 - CHANGE CIRCUMSTANCES – “Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.”

Day 5: James 5:15 - HEALING – “Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.”

Day 6: Philippians 4:6, 7 - PEACE – “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.
