The Fragility of Life
Having
worked for years in the funeral industry, one can develop a rather thick skin
when it comes to death. I have been with loved ones as they say goodbye to a
friend or family member, held the hand of close friends as they have passed on
to glory and the list goes on and on. One thing is common whether they are
people of faith or not; most wish they had more time with the deceased. My
cousin passed away recently, far too soon and very unexpected. Her passing has
hit the family hard leaving many to question why. Many times in the past
I have been asked that very question and there are those standard answers that
come to mind that you usually hear. Today, I want to answer this question for
my friends and family so that they will not have to wrestle with it when my
time comes.
If the day comes that I should leave this earth
unexpectedly, do not ask why but rather celebrate the fact that I am happy and
filled with joy in Glory. Life on earth is short and our time is limited but I
have had the time of my life and now I am celebrating with my faith family. Why
did it happen so soon? Only God knows the answer to that but what I do know is
our time here is only finite. We must make the most of the time God has granted
each of us. We, as a faith community, should live the message that this is only
the beginning of the perfection that is to come. Celebrate a life well lived
and a forever that has now taken over. Faith is knowing that the sting of death
is only temporary and one day we will reunite in glory for all time. So when,
not if, the day of passing comes for me, know this, it was the right time and I
am waiting to see you all again in Glory.
Is this a morbid message to share this wonderful and
beautiful summer day? It is actually the perfect message to share because it is
one of hope and joy. Live each day like it is your last, share the message of
hope and joy with all you meet and celebrate the gift of life provided to each
and everyone of us by the Father.
This Sunday, we welcome Chaplain Tim Kirby as celebrate as
he shares the Word of God. Sunday service streams on Facebook Live at https://www.facebook.com/todd.macdonald.3158
and starts at 10:30 am MST. We invite you to interact with us as we live stream

Blame It On The Pastor
I came upon an article in the Babylon Bee (http://babylonbee.com/news/source-its-all-the-pastors-fault/)
that took a satirical look at the issues within the church. At first I got
quite the kick out of it but then began to realize that there are churches out
there that look at the pastor as not only the spiritual leader of the church
but also as the mediator, finance officer, planning manager, training leader,
building maintenance supervisor, event organizer, board chair and, at times,
the plumber that is required to plunge the plugged toilet just minutes before the
Sunday service is about to start (yes, this has happened on more than one
occasion). Now don’t get me wrong, I love my church and my faith family and I
am not complaining but, truth be told, many clergy are more like Jacks and Janets
of all trades and being Paul to a congregation tends to take a back seat. I
know there are some out there that will say I am wrong and that they don’t have
these stressors and, to them, I tip my hat and pray continue to be a blessing
to the faith community.
This feels like I am stirring up a hornets nest but I am
going to speak the truth. It is a full time responsibility to preach and minister
but so often the clergy is sidetracked by other stuff. I love what Paul says to
the Ephesians in chapter 3 in verses 8-10 (Msg)
And so here I am,
preaching and writing about things that are way over my head, the inexhaustible
riches and generosity of Christ. My task is to bring out in the open and make
plain what God, who created all this in the first place, has been doing in
secret and behind the scenes all along. Through followers of Jesus like
yourselves gathered in churches, this extraordinary plan of God is becoming
known and talked about even among the angels!
The priority of the clergy, of the leadership and the
faithful is to passionately speak the truth and lift up the name of the Saviour
throughout the land. This Sunday, we are going to look at Ephesians 3 and
explore the passion and joy in sharing His message in all the world.
If you can
not join us in person, we invite you to watch live starting at 11:00 MST on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/todd.macdonald.3158)

No Future In The Past
A good pastor friend of mine, once spoke this in a Sunday sermon. He encouraged us that there is no future in the past. What he was having us understand is that dwelling on anything negative from our past should have nothing to do with our future. When we come to the Lord, He will cast our past into a distant memory. He is concerned only for our present and our future. He will never throw our past up to us like Satan can and will. Now I’m not saying to ignore our past, as it is a part of us, yet don’t be tied to it. We are all different than we were, say five, ten, or even twenty years ago. Our past is part of our make-up, and it is what has molded and shaped us. As we grow in Christ, by being with Him, and His people, we also grow as individuals. We mature, we forgive, we ask for forgiveness, and we move on.
For the past number of months, I have been involved in a project with friends from my past. I never thought that it would happen, but I believe that God put it in motion. My friends and I had a falling out over silly things, and for many years that human error kept us from being in each other’s lives. One person reached out and before we knew it, a fence that was damaged, and broken, was repaired. Personally I felt a great weight being lifted off my shoulders. A lot can be accomplished when an apology is offered, even when we’re not sure if it will be accepted. The result is that we have rekindled a more mature friendship, at a time in our lives when it was truly needed. Do we know why, or the purpose for this particular time? No we don’t, but God does. He has a plan, and part of that plan is to have the past be buried. He’s given my friends and me the gift of the present and our reunion project. He is now planning what will be our future friendship, free of any baggage from yesterday.
God’s hope for all of us is the same. If you have a past that’s not perfect, then you are in good company. Leave it there. Ask Jesus into your life, and come expecting, as He will show you a future you could never imagine.

Reheating Your Cup
For most of us, waking up each morning and having a nice hot
cup of coffee is what gets us going. I’m definitely one of those people. Now,
coffee in itself is not a magical starter fluid, yet it’s more of a routine
that we get into. For myself, making the first cup, while I get ready for work
each day, is part of the waking process. I drink it as I’m driving to work, and
not all, but most days, I will stop at a local Tim’s. My work environment does
allow me to sip while I work. Each cup usually gets cold, and rather than
discarding it, I simply reheat the cup a few times before it’s finally gone.
This may seem odd to some, but I enjoy savoring each sip throughout the day.
Now I always see God in the common things, so here is my
connection to a simple cup of coffee. God, in many peoples’ lives is like this.
We may wake each morning, and the first thing we do is say thank you, and look
forward to Him being a big part of getting our day started. Yet, like the
morning cup, we get busy with life, set Him aside and before we know it, our
enthusiasm, and reliance on Him, cools down. When we realize this, we can
easily reheat His cup of grace by simply spending time with Him. How great is
He in our lives, that no matter how many times we allow Him to cool off in our
spirit, He is readily available to be right there for us. When we have set
Jesus to the outskirts of our days, He is always faithful to us, waiting
patiently. Even when we go through a season of not attending church service
with our faith family, His is still with us.
It is not my intent to compare God with a simple coffee, yet
my point is this. If we allow ourselves to rely on simple human things each day
to bring us temporary comfort, then it should be just as easy to keep our
relationship with Jesus front and center. If you feel your relationship with
God has cooled off as of late, then I encourage you to reheat His cup of
goodness for you, and savor each sip. Believe me, it will last much longer than
the one you poured this morning.

The Sounds Of New Life
What a season this is! New calves, colts and lambs in the fields, new growth in the lawns, the smell of fresh cut grass and the warmth of the sun warming the earth. Last Sunday, as Natalie was preaching, I had the rare opportunity to sit and take in the service from the sound booth at the back of the church. It was truly a joy to hear the wisdom of the Lord spoken and also to hear the sounds of my church family. Every church has a particular sound and ours is no different. There were whispered side conversations all around me, giggles in response to clever quips but the sound that caught my ear was that of a Grandmother enjoy her interaction with her precious charge. I smiled the whole service.
There is another wonderful sound and that is the joy of hearing the celebration of someone who has just come to know Christ as Saviour. There is also witnessing the joy in their eyes and the transformation in their heart as the Holy Spirit fills their heart. There is something about those first moments that is very similar to a new born testing its legs for the first time. For some, the first steps are rather tentative and they reach out for support and encouragement while for others, as soon as the legs are under them, they are racing forward in full stride.
In Ephesians 2, Paul talks of a life filled with darkness and sin and even though we walked in darkness, fumbling around in the night, the Father has always been there. We have all had the opportunity for a new life (v5) and for many, we have accepted Christ into our lives and were raised out of the mire and now walk, or run, anew in the Spirit (v6).
This Sunday, we will explore Paul’s letter to the Ephesians and celebrate a life with Christ. Sunday service live online (https://www.facebook.com/todd.macdonald.3158) starts at 10:30 am MST. We invite you to interact with us as we stream live and join us as we celebrate.

Shift in Paradigm
Have you ever heard this or even spoken these words
yourself?
“I have to go to church today”
“We are doing church Sunday so I can’t go with you”
“Preachers have it great; they only have to work one day a
week”
There are many more that I could pass along from my own past
or even some heard this past week. Here is another one that gets me in the
heart; “they won’t miss me Sunday”. Guess what, we do. Let me elaborate on the shift
that hit me hard this past week while sitting with other pastors, my friends
and cohorts, at a conference at Ambrose University.
My job at the church is twenty hours (that is paid time) a
week. In that time, I have numerous responsibilities that keep me fairly busy.
There are also other activities outside the “paid time” that also keep me on my
toes including another part time job with the Canadian Forces. Now, I know
there are those out there who can relate but the shift in thinking came to me
in a time of prayer. I am paid for twenty hours a week to lead the church spiritually
and administratively but I am not paid to preach the Word on Sunday. I have concluded
that Sunday is a time to share the joy of the Lord with my faith family, to
join with them in the celebration of my Creator and worship His name out of a
passion to serve rather than as a job. How can one get paid to share the
Message of salvation? I look at it as a responsibility of all believers to
passionately share the Good News to the world. Does this this make sense or am
I off my rocker?
If we look at the Sunday celebration gathering as a passion
to share in the joy with others, then “I have to go to church” becomes “I need
to go to church” and “we are doing church Sunday so I can’t come” becomes “we
are celebrating Sunday, you want to come?” Then there is “they won’t miss me if
I’m not there” then becomes “I need to be there”. If we, as clergy, shift our mindset to this
paradigm, will the congregation notice the difference between working one day a
week and celebrating the love of God with the congregation on Sunday?
This Sunday, we are truly blessed to have Natalie MacDonald
share a message with us. To see the service live, join us at 10:30 AM MST (we
are streaming the celebration in song as well) at https://www.facebook.com/todd.macdonald.3158
and chat with us during the service. The service will also be available online
on audio feed at www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.ca (clink the online tab) after the service.
Happy Mother’s Day!!

Mom, I Love You
If Jesus asked, are you running away from me, or running
toward me, could you truthfully answer this question? Our relationship with
Jesus is an intimate, one to one union of love. When we stray from, or get
angry with Him, He understands, forgives, and loves without conditions. When we
are ill and suffering, or healthy and celebrating, He is with us. His love is
always the same as He comes into our situation as our comforter, and our
confidant.
If we stop to think about it, our mothers are just like
Jesus. Now I realize that there are many who, for whatever life circumstance,
do not have a healthy loving relationship with their mothers. This saddens me,
as my siblings and I have been blessed with a wonderful mom who has always
given of herself, for the betterment of her children. We have all gone through
seasons where we were mad at her, yet she forgave, when we were ill, she
nursed. In her own grief of losing our dad to cancer, she reminded us of God’s
love, telling all of us that He never gives us more than we can handle. Like
Jesus, she is always our comforter and confidant. I am blessed also to have a
wife who does all of this with our children, and me. This is the true strength
that only a mother can have.
From the day she brings us home, until the day we carry her
home, through all trials and triumphs, without condition, just like Jesus,
mothers love us through everything. There may be times when she’ll ask the same
question as Jesus, child, do you love me? Without hesitation answer, yes Mom, I
love you. You were conceived, carried, born, raised, and set free, all out of
love that God placed in our mothers’ spirit. You are not a mistake. You are a
miracle.
I’ve heard that soldiers, wounded in battle, inherently cry
out for their mothers, perhaps from the bond of being woven in her womb. I
encourage all, whether in battle or victory, if she is still with you or in
heaven, if you are a husband, son, or daughter, offer a prayer of thanks to God
for her. This Mother’s Day take time to reflect how she is the nurturing
maternal connection to Jesus, as He is the nurturing eternal connection to our
Heavenly Father.

Look Beside You
As I sit to write about what God did this week, I am reminded of how He makes His presence known in so many simple ways. He pulled together a couple of meetings with amazing results. He showed me some of my friends in a weakened state that rallied in their strength and spirit. I witnessed a weary leader in His work fields, realize the importance of rest. I was allowed to offer prayers to a friend in need. He brought me and a group of long-time friends into a place of perfect harmony. He showed me how His power mended a fence that I thought was damaged forever. He reunited two people who had not realized their paths in life crossed thirty years ago in a most extraordinary way.
You see, this is how God seems to work. We can strain every day looking around every corner for Him, yet, He will always choose to show up when you are least expecting Him. Someone told me a few years back that we never see Him coming. Perhaps this is because He is always so close to us that we shouldn’t look past a shadow that someone has cast on us. When we choose to be close to God, then He is close to us. Psalm 73:23-24NCV is a prayer from Asaph to God. Perhaps read this as if you were saying this prayer. “But I am always with you; you have held my hand. You guide me with your advice, and later you will receive me in honor.” Psalm 73:26 NCV,” My body and my mind may become weak, but God is my strength. He is mine forever.”
I am finding more and more these days, that when I learn about Him, He seems to show me His existence and presence more frequently. A great way to learn about Him is a weekly Bible study, and a daily personal read of His word. We cannot really appreciate the value of God in our lives if we don’t seize the opportunity to get to know Him. Just like an earthy friend, we must invest time in nurturing that friendship. We all do this with people we come in contact with. We are introduced, we share moments of time together, we ask and learn about each other, and before we know it, we’re the best of friends.
Jesus is no different. We’ve been introduced, so now is a great time to do the rest. Perhaps if we look closer, rather than farther, we may just catch a glimpse of His greatness.

Faith in My Family
I marvel at family. My brother and I had our disagreements
over the years but no matter what, he is my brother and what you do to him, you
do to me. I would do anything for my brother and by extension, my sister-in-law
and my nieces. When I got married, I found a whole other group of relatives
that immediately fell under that umbrella of protection and the same rules
apply there as well. My father always taught me that the clan is forever;
protect those in the family as they will protect you.
There are times when I am not always in agreement with that
statement but in the end, we are family. When I went through difficult times as
a youth, Mom, Dad and Tim showed up at the door to pull me out of a bad situation
and place me into the protective custody of our home. Funny thought, when I
went home, my room was still just as I left it, a little cleaner perhaps, but
it was still my room.
My church is also an extension of family. I have also
marveled at the history of the Main Avenue family here in Sundre. There have,
over the years, been times of disagreement and struggles and I am sure there
will be more in the future but we are family and family watches out for each
other. I posted a picture on my Facebook page that read; “2000 years ago, Jesus
ended the debate of which lives matter – He died for ALL”. For all those who have the WWJD imprinted on
their hearts, take a look at that last statement – all lives matter and we must
be available to anyone at any time. Yes, we will have disagreements and no, I
will not always get my own way but in the end, Jesus proved that the needs of
the family outweigh the needs of the one – He did go to the cross for each of
us.
This week, we are celebrating our Annual General Meeting and
will broadcast the second half of the meeting live on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/todd.macdonald.3158)
at 11:00 AM Mountain Standard or you can listen after the service on the
website (www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.ca).
This is not your typical AGM as the second half will be singing and the Lead
Pastor’s report (more of a devotional). We hope to see you there.
Shalom
