Welcome to 2018

Welcome to 2018

Every year at this time, people gather to share in the celebration of ringing in the New Year. We stay up until midnight in an attempt to see the clock change to 00:00. Once the clock has chimed 12 times, many will crawl into bed, turn off the alarm for the morning and drift off to sleep. But before this happens, almost everyone will make those New Year promises, the great Resolution! These resolutions vary but all have relatively the same purpose – it’s considered a do over or a new start. One day a year dedicated to a new start and, in many cases, it is a one and done affair. Here is my question, what if a new day resolution could have eternal effect on the individual?

As Saul traveled on the road to Damascus, “he fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”  “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”…Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.” Acts 9:4-6, 19-20

What a remarkable account of a new start. A wrathful God would have put Saul six feet under but Jesus saw the potential in Saul’s testimony, just as He sees the potential in all of our lives, and gave him the chance to preach the Good News. Many will take the time to pledge to lose weight, stop drinking, quit smoking and the list goes on but how about a different tack; Claim the love of Christ, let Him into your life and allow Him to take away your sin and give you a brand new start.

This Sunday, we look at how we can all have that new start that will lead to an eternity of joy and peace. Services start at 10:30 MST and can be seen live on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MainAvenueFellowship/) or viewed afterwards on our website (www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.ca). Bonus this Sunday, at 6:30 pm we will be gathering at the church for an evening of games, fellowship and cookies.

Fourth Sunday of Advent - Love

Many years ago, I did something that was rather dumb and could have cost me my job but my buddy stepped up to the boss and took on my error. You see I was very new to the job and it was an honest mistake but the boss had a habit of laying into the new guys who had made an error. I asked why he did not say who was truly the at fault for the accident and he said that it was no big deal and no one was hurt. He took it on the chin so that I would not feel the wrath of the error.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:9-13 NIV

Numerous times people have quoted this bit of text and said they are not sure if they could take a bullet for anyone but if we read this passage with a different perspective we could also suggest that Christ was saying put the needs of self, one’s own personal desires, and lift up your friend when he or she is in dire need of a helping hand. Jesus often let go of what He was doing so that He could provide comfort for someone in dire need. The ultimate sacrifice was made on the cross for all mankind by Someone who was innocent of any sin or transgression. This is the love of the Saviour
This Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Advent, we look at how we can all lean on the Love of the Lord for our joy and courage. Services start at 10:30 MST and can be seen live on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MainAvenueFellowship/) or viewed afterwards on our website (www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.ca). Bonus this Sunday, at 7:00 pm we will be broadcasting our Christmas Eve Candle Light Service as well.

A Gift, In The Birth Of A Baby

This year, my wife and I were later than usual at decorating our home for Christmas. It was just this past week that we managed to retrieve our decorations, including out pre-lit tree, to make our home cozy and welcoming to our family and friends. Well as fate would have it, many of the lights did not work so we endeavoured to remove the labyrinth of factory strings. After toiling for almost an hour, we finally succeeded, and just in the nick of time, as we both began to become frustrated. So, we laid everything aside till the following evening.

While looking over the endless boxes scattered about, I realized that regardless of the lights, the trimmings, or the stress, Christmas would come. Our home would be a place of celebration marking the birth of Jesus, a baby, and our King. The first Christmas, as our pastor reminded us, was probably very quiet, with very few even noticing. There would not have been the worry over the gift list, the dinner plans, the trees or even lights that did not work. There was a select few who God probably had chosen to be there at the time of Jesus’ birth. He allowed the wise men to follow the star they had seen in the east until it stopped over where Jesus was to be born, as told in Matthew 2.

So here we are, some two thousand plus years later, and our world still celebrates this birth. Yes, we decorate with bright lights and festive trimmings. It should be our way of shouting that our King was born, and we are sharing Him, Emmanuel, God with us. Our home like many others will be decorated, and we will remember the true reason. When we open the door to our friends and family, they will know that Jesus is alive and well within our home. Regardless of the grandeur of the tinsel, or the number of working lights, we will be reminded that a most precious gift was given to all of us. In a couple of weeks, all of this will be again, set away for another year, yet Jesus will remain.

I encourage everyone who may read this to look past the lights, push past the gifts, and focus on the gift of love from God. Share love with your family, friends, and yes, strangers. Remember, Christmas is not a string of lights on a tree rather it’s a time to thank God for the lifeline to Him that Jesus represents, a gift in the birth of a baby.

I Can Only Imagine

I Can Only Imagine

Well, we are one week away from the day we will celebrate the birth of Jesus. I was thinking about that, and imagined that this would be the week (timeline) where the order was given from Caesar for everyone to return to their place of birth to participate in a compulsory census. Joseph and Mary, expecting a child would now be on their way to Bethlehem. The distance, by today’s standards, is short. Yet back then, on foot, through terrain and dangers would seem such a daunting journey. All of this while being guided by God, and obeyed by a couple who would live forever in the history books.

Over this next week, I encourage everyone to think, and reflect on how all odds were overcome. Herod gave orders to find this King that was foretold. God ensured that he would never succeed. A king, The King, would arrive, right under the nose of the enemy, hidden in plain sight. Please take a few minutes to read Luke 2:1-20. As we close in on what we call Christmas day, let’s share this with everyone. Wish all you have contact with, a Merry Christmas. Please do not take offence when someone posts, or wishes you a happy holiday, or season’s greetings. Instead, thank them and wish them peace. Let the groups who find it necessary to expel energy on choosing to not believe, to muddle through as we celebrate. For those who scoff at the Bible, let them then pray for them. Yet, show them by your actions, that Jesus, this little baby, can make a difference in your life, if you only let Him.

You see, we who believe will walk through this hectic season with anticipation of a miracle. The pressure of the gift race will have no effect on us, for we will celebrate in a week that God thought so much of mankind that He sent His son to be born among us. Who but God, could have planned that one baby would be born, and change the world forever? This gift, unmatched in history was, and is, to be given to all mankind, so please share Him with everyone you meet. Prepare your home, your heart, and your spirit to receive Him. I can only imagine how this unfolded so many years ago.  I can only imagine.

A Prayer To Ponder

In Your Will, I Will (The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!”Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” 1 Sam 3:10)

Speak Lord for Your servant is listening and ready. My Lord, You have been my guide and my light, I will always praise You.
I ask Lord that you will give me strength to help others, the wisdom to give proper advice and encouragement and the heart to think of others needs before my own.
Lord, You provide all my needs and Your will be done as You design, not me. Blessings come from You, Lord, and not from mankind.
Praise be to you God for Your faithfulness to Your children. Bless You, Lord, for Your perfect love. Your servant is ready, Lord.
Your Word is guidance and comfort. Blessed are we who look to you and find Your guidance and strength, blessed are we who look beyond self and see the needs of Your children and, by Your will, reach out.
You are my love and my joy. You provide and offer, offer your love and from us desire a response in kind.
Lord, my God, great are You in all the universe, greater are You than all we know, greater even than the darkness of the universe is Your power, wisdom and love.
Be my vision, my focus and my only desire my Lord and open my eyes to Your greatness. Take from me my selfish desires and open my heart fully to You and Your will for my life.
Great are you, oh Lord, and great is Your joy. We are blessed by Your presence and in Your love we find our perfect rest.
Your joy you provide to us, Your joy is perfect in Your Son and infinite in You, Holy Spirit.
Be with me Lord and grant me peace.

Amen

Joy To The World

Last year was a tough one with the death of our pup, Chica, a Christmas away from Natalie’s folks and a variety of issues that just made me think where is the joy. You tell yourself that Christmas is all about celebrating family and friends, the birth of Christ and good will towards all people but the reality is life happens. I put my counsellor hat on and think “Am I hypersensitive to the ugliness of events during what is supposed to be a festive time?” So often we can power through the tough times outside this time of the year but can feel rather deflated waiting for the other shoe to drop in this season of good cheer.

There is an answer and this year it is proving to be a God send; read the Psalms.

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day.
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. Ps 96:1-3

Isaac Watts used several pieces of scripture as inspiration as he penned his famous carol including Psalms 96.

Joy to the world the Lord has come, let earth receive her King.
Let every heart prepare Him room.
And heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and heaven and nature sing.

The trials and tribulations of the world are with us every day but the Glory of the Lord outshines the darkness and if we look to the Light, we will know His perfect joy and peace.

This Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent, we look at how we can all lean on the Joy of the Lord for inspiration and strength. Services start at 10:30 MST and can be seen live on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MainAvenueFellowship/) or viewed afterwards on our website (www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.ca).

Peter's Picks

The Perfect 7-day Diet – Peter’s Picks
‘What is Christmas?’
Day 1: Isaiah 7:14 – “All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).”
Day 2: Isaiah 9:6, 7 – “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!”
Day 3: Titus 3:3-7 – “Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other. But – When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.”
Day 4: 1 John 5:11 – “And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”
Day 5: John 1:14 – “So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.”
Day 6: Luke 2:11 – “The Savior – yes, the Messiah, the Lord – has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!”
Day 7: John 1:12 – “But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.”

Peace

Can there be peace in our day? This is a universal question with a plethora of answers. There is a constant in the responses and a caveat; yes there can be peace but it has to look like this. As many people who define what peace looks like is the differences in how it will be perceived and accepted.

I like to finish a meal at a Chinese food restaurant with a bowl of Jello. It is the perfect way to end the meal and fills those last few gaps left in the old stomach. The other day, I was told the best way to end off the meal was with those cream stuffed pastries to which I was completely opposed. The conversation turned into an argument, which then turned into a rather unpleasant departure (this was only an illustration). One person’s peace may not be another person’s idea of peace but instead of seeing past the personal preferences, many choose to force their own will and the battle is on.

There are those who do not believe in the birth of the Messiah over two thousand years ago. They find their peace in a different way. My question is this; do we prepare the ground for the planting by creating a bad environment for the seed? If there is a peace, then share in that peace. The peace of God comes in a variety of vessels but the primary message is clear; God came for all mankind so that we may know the Perfect Peace. Love our neighbour as yourself, love completely and without prejudice. Christ came for the princes and the paupers and He loves all equally and perfectly. This is the message of God.

This Sunday, the second Sunday of Advent, we look at how we can all be the Light of the Season to all those around us. Services start at 10:30 MST and can seen live on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MainAvenueFellowship/) or viewed afterwards on our website (www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.ca).

Your Presence

So here we are, again in what we call the Christmas season. Our society will anxiously wait for snow, concerts, parades and yes, sales, as our stress levels climb. Yet, it does not have to be this way. You see, we need only stop and remember what we should be anticipating. Our culture celebrates the birth every December 25th, but as we were reminded in church last Sunday, it is not Jesus’ birthdate. Our world has, over time tried to replace Him with red suits, snowmen, and credit card purchases.

Christmas this year, should be a time to turn back the clock, and get back to what is really important. Let’s all search out a time when children’s school concerts sang of a babe in a manger, when store window paintings included…today in the city of David, a few weeks when every church and many homes proudly displayed a nativity. Let’s remember a season when church bells rang out Silent Night in the silent of the night, snowflakes on our tongue, as we walked hand in hand with our sweetheart. Let’s shop, not till we drop, yet for a memorable gift that represents the gifts offered to a new born King. Rekindle the teaching of Jesus’ birth to our children, and let them know that He was born, a symbol of hope for all the world.

Now don’t get me wrong, yes we are in the Christmas season, which I love. Let’s enjoy the excitement of family dinners together, reunions of those perhaps estranged, and a connecting of family and friends. To those who are alone, or lonely, or have lost loved ones and are mourning, please let them know they are not forgotten. Encourage them to remember better times, and to look forward. Help someone along the way who has very little, or nothing, and feed someone who is hungry. Let this be a time of a hope for peace in our homes, communities, country, and our world.

Allow yourself to celebrate Jesus and the absolute miracle of His birth against all odds. Remember that even Herod could not stop His coming. This king came, not on a white steed, yet quietly, as foretold, wrapped in rags, a gift to, and for all mankind. Perhaps now, we can all enjoy our Christmas season, rather than fret over the gift buying. Let your precious gift to each other be, your presence and time. It is worth more than anything borrowed money could ever buy.

Look Up, Look Forward, And Look For Him

Well, here’s to another great week with God as our co-pilot. I realize that my writings are all flavored with encouragement of God’s grace. That is because I see it every day, and hope that all who read this will do the same. I know that all of us have issues to deal with, and that there are times when we feel kicked when we’re down, yet we all wake up every day. That in itself should be something we give immediate thanks for.

I would like to share just one day of God’s grace that happened this past week. While walking into work one morning with a co-worker, we chit chatted about how the morning was so warm, and calm. We were both carrying our first coffee, and were a couple of minutes late. We didn’t fret, rather commented that it was just a minute. She simply said, that we should never waste even one minute of our time. That spoke volumes to me as I realized that God had used her to give both of us a profound message. Don’t waste our lives fretting over things. Remember, He’s got your day planned.

Later on that same morning, while serving a customer whom I had never met before, he appreciated the service given and left me with a simple parting message. He asked me and my co-worker to share a cup of kindness for him. Just like that, he was gone. Again, I saw God using him to pass an encouraging spirit forward in the shape of a simple request to love each other.

My work day ended this way. My last customer labored his way into my workplace. His health situation was such that a mere few steps would have him gasping for breath. Yet, his kind demeanor and soft spoken voice was not robbed by his illness. He purchased a small handful of screws, and as we chatted, his voice, just above a whisper, gave thanks to God. He simply said, tomorrow will be better, then slowly, but surely made his way to a waiting drive.

In these conversations, God shone a light into my eyes, so bright that my soul was heated up. He, in His way, through others will always encourage us to look up, look forward, and look for Him, and that, will carry us through today, and tomorrow.

It’s Christmas Time Already?

Where has the year gone? It seems like only yesterday we were ringing in the New Year and saying goodbye to another hectic Christmas season, or should I say holiday season? I don’t want to sound too harsh but once we roll through the Black Friday month (at least the advertising makes me think it lasts a month), there seems to be a period of joy and harmony that starts to permeate people’s lives and hearts.

World War One was a time of great strife and atrocities. Lines of troops dug in across vast areas of killing grounds. They were ordered out of the trenches to storm the battlefield just to take another few yards of ground. The conditions were atrocious and this all added to the anger each side felt for the other. There would be no peace until the other was forced back to where they came from.

On the Eve of Christmas in 1914, the troops in the trenches took note of the stillness of the night and began to sing carols. Who started the singing was unimportant but when one side began singing “O Come, All Ye Faithful” the other side joined in from the depths of their own trenches. Two sides, locked in mortal combat pausing to sing  song of joy to the King of all kings. My God is greater than the anger of any war. Even though there was a direct order pertaining to the peaceful fraternization of enemies at any time, on December 25th, 1914, around 100,000 men claimed a Christmas truce and broke bread together.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 NIV

This Sunday marks the first day of Advent. Sunday Services start at 10:30 MST and can seen live on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MainAvenueFellowship/) or viewed afterwards on our website (www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.ca).

The Persecuted Church, The Upside

So, over the past four weeks we have looked at the Persecuted Church in the time of Paul and Jesus plus we have talked about the persecution in countries we can not talk about and in our own western civilization. There are some very powerful stories of miracles and faith courage in the shadow of oppression. It was a tough four weeks with the message, at times, being very convicting but there were also some incredible stories of triumph.

I received numerous emails and responses to a social experiment I tried on Facebook. A simple declaration of “Jesus is our Saviour” was met with numerous likes and loves and it was also shared, responded to and I hope there were some smiles of joy as that understanding that Jesus loves you regardless of your position. Let that one sink in. Regardless of how much you persecute the church, Jesus loves you just as much as those who have always loved Jesus with every ounce of their being. There is one key and it is one that only an individual can answer; do you accept Jesus into your heart, will you ask Him to forgive your sins and let Him know that you love Him back?

“This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. John 3:16‭-‬17 MSG‬

This message is so easy to communicate and, in an area where there is persecution, this is a joyous message filled with hope. The upside to persecution, there is growth and, in many cases, miraculous growth. So this Sunday, we look at the upside. Sunday Services start at 10:30 MST and can seen live on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MainAvenueFellowship/) or viewed afterwards on our website (www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.ca).

Preparation: Long Road To The Finished Work

It seems as though I am never out of things to repair, or rebuild around my home. This past Labor Day weekend, I had to have the entire roof, including support structure removed due to water damage. Over time, within the ceiling and walls, enough water wicked its way to cause structural issues. I am only now, to the point of new ceiling sheet rock. The long detailed process has at times been overwhelming and it felt like I was making zero progress. Finally, the finished end is in sight, and I should have my great room back for Christmas. I’m sharing this to illustrate that the long process of preparation for paint always takes longer that we think.
Our lives, when we learn about the Bible, and God can be very much a similar process. We all begin knowing very little, if not anything about God. Regardless of the age where we enter into a personal relationship with Jesus, the remainder of our days will be a very complex and detailed journey. Like a home renovation project, the elements of our learning journey will be such that we may wonder if we are learning anything. Then, there comes a day when we have that aha moment, when scripture begins to remain with us. Under the guidance of great teachers, and encouragers, we see how the magnificent factual history of Jesus allows us to see that our preparation to one day meet Him is worth the effort.
Our life long preparation to one day meet Jesus face to face will be a long, yet worthwhile and exciting process. All of the learning, following, believing, and sharing of His word will finally pay off. The finished work, at least here on Earth, will carry us to the promised eternity with God. We can only imagine how the captives felt as they were released from Pharaoh’s Egypt into freedom. For years, they too prepared, and God rewarded them.
So, the question now is this. Are you doing your own preparation work now to meet Jesus? Have you accepted His invitation to spend eternity with Him? Are you anticipating your finished life here? Is your life in the process of renovation? If you are prepared to answer yes, then hang on, because God has a wonderful reward waiting for you. The preparation will take a while, but in our end,it will be worth it.

Our Forever Home

So, this past week our household welcomed yet another rescued fur baby. She is a Calico feline, now known as Callie. She is not a feral cat, but was left on her own in the elements. There she was, alone, cold, hungry, with no one to care for her. She now has a warm, cozy home, with plenty of food, love and companionship. She immediately warmed up to my wife and I and is not hesitant in coming for food.

Now, this should seem very familiar. How many of us have been where this fur baby has been? Have we all at some time thought we were alone then Jesus showed up. Have we not been left in the cold, you know separated from God by our own choice, and Jesus showed up? Have we all been babes in God’s presence and all of a sudden we were so hungry to know Him? I believe you can see the parallels here.

Once we recognize that God has been there all the time we struggled, we should also recognize that He has offered us all a forever home with Him. In His presence, we will be warm of heart. Under His umbrella, we will be kept cozy, and constantly fed when hungry. Within His family (our faith family) we will never lack love and companionship. When we finally reach the place and time of our home going, our room in His mansion will have been made ready. We will all know then, what we should believe now, and that is that Jesus and eternity are waiting for us.

So, like the pets we care for in our life time, we will know that someone loved us so much that they secured our life and future with them. That person is Jesus. He loves us so much, that he willingly went to the cross for us. He rose, came back and left us with a promise that He is coming back. Yet before He does, He has gone to prepare a place for us with Him. Like my wife and I making a place for a cold lonely little discarded cat, He is there, waiting to rescue the next lost soul who will run toward a loving hand, and a new home.

It’s Not Always About Me

I have a question for you; do I attack your views, your beliefs or your faith? No? Why is that? Is it that I respect your position? Is it that I support and endorse your views? Is it that I expect you to respect my right to have a stance or an opinion without being attacked or bullied into taking on a similar stance with you?

Over the years, a few readers have questioned the opinions of the writers and contributors to this blog spot. In the majority of the cases, the conversations and debates have been spirited but respectful however, on the odd occasion, I have had to have sidebar discussions because the attacks became personal rather than about the topic. I don’t want to get into specifics but, in the past, when we discuss some controversial issues and someone decides we are talking about them specifically, the derogatory descriptors come out and we are back on our heels. So here is the question; why is your opinion so much more correct than my position?

Wars are fought, lines drawn and relationships are broken because people don’t respect the beliefs or faith of others. If I proclaim what I believe to be the truth, I am not forcing you to change your position, belief or stance; I am simply stating what I believe. I often listen to the views and beliefs of others and many times am grateful for the opportunity to learn from it. It does not mean that I endorse it or support it but I respect the person’s position.

This Sunday, we conclude the Persecuted Church series by looking at the Christian Faith Gatherings of the western nations. Sunday Services start at 10:30 MST and can seen live on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MainAvenueFellowship/) or viewed afterwards on our website (www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.ca).

The Persecuted Church - Just Shut Up

Many years ago, a very opinionated young man came out with a fairly controversial set of beliefs and set out to change a nation. In the early days, he carefully communicated his views and slowly set out to spread his beliefs. One turned into ten which soon became hundreds and then thousands. Soon the beliefs had conquered nations but it did come at a cost.

As the authorities found out, they came to pay more attention to him and decided that he needed to be silenced so they sent brute squads after him. When it was found that physical violence did not work, they sent spies and intelligence officers to test him, trip him up and discredit him. They made a mockery of him, his family and his friends making it very difficult for anyone to want to join up.

In the end, the only way to shut him up was to kill him but the grave would not stop the movement and the message continued to grow. You may think this is the life of Christ but I would suggest that this is also the life of thousands of Christian Missionaries around the world working in countries and regions where it is illegal to preach the gospel. They preach a message of peace and joy through Jesus Christ and yet they are persecuted because the powers that be do not like what they hear. This was very prevalent in Christ’s time and is very relevant today.

This Sunday, we are going to look at the underground church where the threat of death is real but the love of God is more powerful. We invite you to join us either in person or on FaceBook Live ( htttp://www.facebook.com/todd.macdonald.3158 ) at 10:30 MST or watch the service at a later date by visiting our website and go to the Live Stream Upload page ( www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.ca )

Nothing Can Come Between Us

Have you ever stopped to realize that nothing can come between you and God? Well, there could be one thing at times, and that’s our selves. There is no need to speak through a mediator, or middle man when having a talk with Jesus. By the mere thought in your spirit, or the whisper of His name, you will have His undivided attention. Everyone does. You can confess and profess to Him in private. He already knows your needs, yet He still wants to hear you speak your dependency on Him. He wishes nothing more than to have us accept His invitation to just sit and chat. I’m sure if our earthly father said, come, let’s sit and talk a while and take time to get to know each other, we would. I can just imagine Jesus saying, come my child let’s sit and let me tell you about my Father.

My dad and I used to do this, and there are times when I do the same with my sons and my daughter. I can tell you that there is no greater gift than to sit with your children and just talk, or listen. We learn so much about each other that way. The same holds true about Jesus. We cannot expect to learn about, know, understand, or trust Him if we don’t.

Our pastor offered this last Sunday. She encouraged us to greet Jesus every morning as we open our eyes. A simple, good morning, or a thank you for the day you will provide, is a great way to start each day. We have taken her challenge, and I encourage all of those reading this to do the same. The way you begin your day, will dictate how it will end. So, now that you know that nothing can come between you and God, including the ceiling, why not give it a try? Enter into a chat with Jesus whenever you feel like it. He will know it’s you and speak to your heart. John 10:27NCV tell us,” My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me”. Be assured, even if you haven’t spoken to Him in a while, He will still know it’s you, will still listen, and will in His own way, answer. Proof again, that nothing that can come between you and Him.

What Would Jesus Do?

I remember when people used to wear those bracelets all the time and, to tell the truth, there were a few times when I thought I really should not be wearing this public declaration. Sometimes the promise to do that which would be considered a good reflection of Christ was rather lacking and the bracelet felt more like a tensor bandage biting into my wrist to remind me to act like my Master. These were the times when I was ashamed of my actions. There was also the time when I got not one but two photo radar tickets on the same street at the same location about fifteen minutes apart. On the back of my brown pony was a bright, shiny fish sticker announcing to the world that I was a Christian. The Calgary Police service must have had a great chuckle out of that one. The reason I talk of these incidents is because afterwards I realized that the world was watching and I was helping to perpetuate the misconception that all Christians don’t walk the talk.

He (Saul) fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" "Who are you, Lord?" Saul asked. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," he replied. Acts 9:4-5

This was the moment that Saul (Paul) went from being the persecutor to the persecuted. Saul rounded up the followers of Christ and, with letters in hand, was involved with the identification, persecution and, in the case of Stephen, witness to the execution of Christians.

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Mat 25:40 NIV

This passage can also be reversed by saying whatever you did to the least of these my children you have also done to me. When you persecute my people, you also do to Christ. Persecute the Christians and Jesus feels the pain of the masses.  Paul went on from this point to know and understand the fullness of the pain of persecution yet he became one of the most passionate messenger of the Good News.

This week we study the persecution of the church after the death and resurrection of the Messiah. And The Fight Is On!

A few weeks ago, a gentleman wrote in regarding an article published on our BlogSpot. It was not my writing but rather that of a friend and the person did not appreciate the message. The comment was “I don’t want your religious views splattered all over Facebook so you need to stop”. I took some time to look at some of the posts this other person put online and found I was not in agreement with their views. Interesting fact, I don’t have to agree with everything that is out there but I will not censor them nor will I resort to bullying techniques to shut them up. The question is this; what makes your stance more correct than mine? If I like the colour green and you like the colour blue, is that enough to start an argument? Are you going to start a shame campaign by gathering all those who are partial to blue to start a feud?

When Jesus was going through the land, He was relentlessly bullied by the naysayers. They tried to trip Him up with trick questions, bully Him with threats of physical violence and garner the support of the crowds in an attempt to silence Him. Christ’s response was to educate them through peaceful means (except for that incident in the Temple) and have them think about exactly what they were doing. A while ago, an acquaintance of mine responded to a repost in a respectful and thoughtful way and I truly appreciated his input, in fact I learned something in the exchange. Christ also presented His message in a manner that was not designed to bully you into acceptance but rather offer an alternative that has an eternal promise. His promise is one that the world could use right now. Love God with all you are and love your neighbours, be they friends or enemies, as yourself. What exactly is wrong with this message? Even if you don’t believe in God, is it not refreshing to have an entire group of people seeking out ways to love on you? Where is the down side?

This week we look at the Scriptures for hope and a message of love.

The Things You Find Out

Growing up, I remember attaching myself to my father to learn all I could from him. Dad, being a farmer from Manitoba, struck out on his own at a very early age. He had a six grade education, yet he was one of the smartest people I’ve ever known. His carpentry and mechanical skills seemed to be inherent and woven into his DNA. I always looked up to him and as a son, wanted to be just like him.

These days, my mom and I occasionally enjoy some coffee time and through our conversations I learn something new about her every time.  For example, as recent as last week she told me that she worked for the New Glasgow Evening News in the 1940’s delivering newspapers in Thorburn. She, at about ten years of age would walk the roads until she saved enough money to buy a used bicycle from a friend. How fitting, that seventy years later, I am writing these messages for the same. She used to clean houses and give most of her pay to my grandmother to help run the household. Now, these things may not mean a lot to most reading this, but to me, it allowed me to know a bit more of how my mom’s work ethic was developed and passed onto us.

I am mentioning this as a demonstration that when we spend time with our parents, spouses, friends, children, and yes God, we will be amazed at what we learn about each of them. If we didn’t spend time together in each other’s presence, we will never know anything about the most important people in our lives. The natural order of things is that parents will graduate to God’s glory before children, so we should be hungry to learn and share all we can.

When we gather with friends for church and bible studies, we are honoring Jesus’ invitation to sit with Him. He wants so much for all of us to share our own “coffee” time with Him so we can learn as much as we can about Him. He has even given us a great book to read and learn from, so we can get a small taste of what He has in store for us when we meet Him. So this week, I encourage you to sit in His shadow, read His book, and listen as He shares His story with you. Like me learning about my mom, you too will be amazed at the things you will find out.

Peter's Picks

The Perfect 7-day Diet – Peter’s Picks
‘What If I Trust God?’
Day 1: Jeremiah 17:7, 8 – “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.”
Day 2: Proverbs 3:5, 6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
Day 3: Proverbs 16:3 – “Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.”
Day 4: Psalm 91:1, 2 – “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.”
Day 5: Psalm 121:3 – “He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber.”
Day 6: Isaiah 26:3 – “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”
Day 7: Lamentations 3:24, 25 – “I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!’ The Lord is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him.”

Where We Left Off

This past weekend I played a dance with my band mates from years ago. The past year for us was a time of re-acquaintance, catching up, and mending broken fences. When we began our rehearsals for a couple of reunion dates, it was like time stood still, then just clicked back on. After a few rusty starts, and memory stretches, we seemed to have picked up from where we left off many years ago. We had all walked away from a tight run of twenty years, and in a flash, we were back. The common thread was that we were all older, a bit slower, but there was still a fire in the belly. Without going into detail, there were markers beforehand that I recognized later that I would know that we would reboot. As I thought about the last concert, I replayed all the preparation, and finally the event. It was a success, and whatever happens in the future, we know we are again, friends and brothers.

God gives each of us the same opportunity. When, not if, we go through a time, or season of disconnect from Him, He waits, patiently. He knows no broken fences between Him and us. We, as humans separate ourselves from time to time from God. Yet He never separates Himself from us. Nothing we could ever do can break the love bond He has with us. He is in us, around us, and with us always. Without us knowing it, I believe He guides us, and when He knows the time is right for us, He reveals. He never revives old wounds, never digs up or throws our past at us. He allows us the free will to pick up with Him, from where we left off. Then, like the spark I had with my band brothers, He reignites a fire for Him within us that gently says, it’s like I never left. Once this happens, and it will, you will feel a sense of rediscovery. It will evoke the question, God, what did I miss? His answer will be, nothing my child, I have been with you the whole time, now let’s you and I take up from where we left off.

I encourage you to ask yourself. Is this my day to reconnect with Jesus? The answer will be, yes.

I Am Not Sure I Would Want To Go To Church Either

I recently read an article from Promise Keepers that really spoke to the message from this past Sunday. The sermon last week focused on the difference between a church fighting to survive and a church seeking to thrive. There is a huge difference between surviving and thriving and it all begins with a shift in attitude, a paradigm shift as it were.

The article from Promise Keepers (click here) is entitled Anti-Everything. In it, the author, Jud Wilhite, suggests that the church has gotten so bogged down in the rules and rituals that say NO that we forget that there are many more occasions to celebrate YES. For some, they see church as a negative place and view God as the source of anti-everything where the exact opposite is true. Some quote that God refers to money being evil where, in fact, scripture states that “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil” 1 Timothy 6:10. This is only one example of numerous inaccurate teachings of scripture and I have heard so many complain that church is a place for the holier than thou’s to go and judge the world.

If we are to thrive, we have to preach that God wants us to say YES! Now, I am not saying that we say yes to heresy but rather that we say YES to sound teaching. YES, God wants the very best for each and every one of us so much so that He gave His one and only Son so that we may recognize Him as Saviour and live in the promise of an intimate relationship with our Lord. YES we can love the Lord our God with every aspect of our being and we can love our neighbour as ourselves. Do we really need to say don’t harm those around us if we hold fast to loving our neighbour? The scriptures are full of the promise of YES and when we live in this promise others will see the positive aspect of God’s Message and the church will thrive!!

We invite you to join us this Sunday either in person or live on Facebook Live (https://www.facebook.com/todd.macdonald.3158) at 10:30 MST to hear Rev. Glenn Reeder as he brings us a wonderful message! You can also watch the service later in the week by going to our web page (www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.com) and clicking on the Live Stream Upload tab and clicking on the link for the Sunday service.

‘A God of Grace’
Day 1: John 1:14 – “So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.”
Day 2: Ephesians 2:8, 9 – “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.”
Day 3: Hebrews 4:16 – “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”
Day 4: Romans 3:23, 24 – “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.”
Day 5: Romans 5:6-8 – “When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”
Day 6: Ephesians 1:7 – “He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.”
Day 7: Colossians 1:13, 14 – “For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.”

Let Us Flourish

I get emails from Flourishing Congregations Institute and look forward to reading the material but this month the title of the article floored me; Faith Communities With Nothing To Lose. I read the article (http://newscoopyyc.coop/faith-communities-with-nothing-to-loose/) and was not only staggered by the title but also the similarities to many churches I am watching grow in numbers and in influence. Our church was seeking change and when Natalie and I were interviewed, one of the questions we asked was “is the church open to new ideas?” The answer was a decisive yes and we have, as a family of faith, grown in numbers and faith.

Go back almost two thousand years. The governing bodies were very similar to events of today with dictators, army rule, corruption, immoral behaviour and so much more. The religious leaders had it great because nothing had changed significantly in their realm for decades and they were very comfortable. Then came Jesus. Christ rocked the world by teaching the Truth in both word and deed, built relationships and community, challenged the status quo and taught a nation how to love perfectly. He knew that there would be those who would challenge or even plot against Him but there needed to be a realignment to the way the world was looking at their faith walk.

Is your faith community willing to try something new or make changes in order to reach a seeking and hurting nation? One of the worst things I have ever heard is “we have never done it that way before” without there being the follow-up “let’s give it a shot; what do we have to lose?” Think about it,  Jesus went forward with nothing to lose! Is it time for us to follow suit? What do we have to lose?

We invite you to join us this Sunday either in person or live on Facebook Live (https://www.facebook.com/todd.macdonald.3158) at 10:30 MST. You can also watch the service later in the week by going to our web page (www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.com) and clicking on the Live Stream Upload tab and clicking on the link for the Sunday service.

Colours Of The Harvest

This past weekend, we here in Nova Scotia were blessed with some of the best weather we could ask for. Sunny skies and warm temperatures made the Thanksgiving weekend so wonderful. As my wife and I spent time together at our place on Eden Lake, I was reminded of a message I had written a couple of years ago, and included in my first book, Frog Legs and Photographs, messages of encouragement. The time together in the quiet, allowed us to see God’s masterpiece, so I would like to re-share this message of thanks with all of you.

As I travelled on the highway, in mid-October near our home here in Nova Scotia, I noticed how quickly God reveals His pallet of fall color. During this time of year, trees will be in the absolute prime of kaleidoscope of color. Look closely, and you will see trees with lush green, vibrant red, orange or yellow, and some are already bare. Each color offers something different to our senses, as we think of the stage of their life cycle for the year. Green signifies a remaining time of growing, the other colors represent a successful harvest, and bare branches are the clearing of the fields, prepared for future growth.

Ponder God’s Kingdom, imagining where each of us fit in His color scale. Regardless of our age, background, or experience, we will always have green leaves if we accept Jesus’ life energy to be nurtured and grow in Him. Stay hungry and thirsty for His presence in our lives. Psalm 107:9 GNT,” He satisfies those who are thirsty and fills the hungry with good things”. The red, orange, and yellow in our lives are the harvesting of endless bounty as we share Jesus with those around us, whenever and wherever we offer to feed the spiritually starving. Bare branches are the prepared fields, ready for fall planting as we reach out to those who have yet to accept Jesus into their lives.

God’s colors promise a better future for all who will come into the fields, inviting Jesus into their hearts and trusting Him to take care of them. Psalm 37:4-5 GNT, “Seek your happiness in the Lord, and He will give you your hearts’ desire. Give yourself to the Lord; trust Him and He will help you.” Most importantly, it is the time to give Him thanks…for everything.   I hope that as you travel the roads this time of year, that the colors you see and enjoy, will have a new meaning in your life.
