The obvious fear in this passage from Matthew could be said
to be the fear of the weather or the fear of drowning but for me there is a
part of this passage that I fear even more. Think about this for a moment. It
has been said that the only guarantee in life is death and taxes. To fear
death, in this context, is, in my opinion, a fear of the inevitable but my fear
stems from the example of what happens when our focus shifts from the Lord to
the world.
Shortly
before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw
him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said,
and cried out in fear.
But
Jesus immediately said to them: “Take
courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on
the water.”
“Come,” he said.
Then
Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But
when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord,
save me!”
Immediately
Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he
said, “why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:25-31 NIV
Jesus said to take courage, it’s me, don’t be afraid. Peter
still doubted what he saw and said “if” it is you, call me to you. Christ
called him out and Peter took his eyes off His strength and gripped doubt.
“How can this be happening, it’s impossible, it’s never been
done before, this can’t really be happening!”
Jesus says, ”follow me, take courage” yet the world says, “how
do you really know this to be true?” My fear is giving into the doubt because
it is so easy to sink into the murky depths. Jesus has His hand extended and
says, “Take my hand!”
