Okay, I am a bit older and remember a bunch of shows that many
might not. Those shows were quite flattering to the father figure. In “Leave It
To Beaver”, Ward was a wise father that had no problem with his role and was
rarely made fun of in his position as head of the household. The same can be
said for Steven Douglas from “My Three Sons” and Mike Brady from “The Brady
Bunch”. The father figure was a position of respect and wisdom and he was
considered to be the head of the household. I can tell you, my father called
his father “Dad” his entire life and I would never think of calling my dad by
his first name (truth be told I did once… and only once).
I watch shows today and it seems like the father is the butt
of all the jokes and is viewed as the bumbling fool and dullard of the
relationship. As time goes by and the demise of the family unit grows
increasingly more common, one thing stands out for me; the father is not
portrayed as the strong head of the household. Why is it that the strong father
figure is being degraded by the media? All I can think of is that the father of
the house is the head of household. According to Paul’s letter to the
Ephesians:
Wives,
understand and support your husbands in ways that show your support for Christ.
The husband provides leadership to his wife the way Christ does to his church,
not by domineering but by cherishing. So just as the church submits to Christ
as he exercises such leadership, wives should likewise submit to their
husbands. Eph 5:22-24 Msg
This Sunday we celebrate the strong father, the caring father,
the Godly father. A father will love his wife and family with the passion that
God loves the church. He will raise them up in the Word and will lead by
example and the family will respect the responsibility bestowed upon him. There
is unity in the family when God is at the center and the family loves together.
