A friend of mine was touting the newness of his new phone
and how it was so technologically advanced that there was none that could
compare. He told me it was waterproof, dust proof, bullet proof and was exactly
what he needed in his life. He dressed it up with a variety of accessories and
even set it up as the center of his everyday life. It booked his appointments,
kept track of his steps, communicated with his friends and was at his beckon call
to entertain him with games and distractions. This was his idol, the very best
in smart technology. Three weeks later, he was mister misery when he found out
that the god that served him required upgrades, updates and more upkeep and
suddenly he was serving a needy idol. Then came the final straw. This god was
no longer the elite idol he had come to expect, it was obsolete and needed to
be replaced.
While Paul was waiting
for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of
idols. Acts 17:16 NIV
A group of Epicureans and Stoics were looking for a debate
and … they took him and brought him to a
meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, “May we know what this
new teaching is that you are presenting? You are bringing some strange ideas to
our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.” (All the
Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing
nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.) Acts 17:19-21 NIV
“The God who made the
world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does
not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human
hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and
breath and everything else. Acts
17 24-25 NIV
My God has provided the needs of all mankind throughout the
world. All we can make through our own devises, be it false idols such as gold
and silver, paper currency and shiny rocks or even a new Black Apple Galaxy Triplay
10 with shockwave quad core 5G technology is temporary and fleeting. The last
part of the sentence in Acts 17:25 says it all, He gives life and breath and
everything else. His is a message of caring and sharing. There is only one God
and His primary concern is for all He has created. There are places all around
us set up to be worshiped as idols. Do not loose focus for the One who created
everything is the One who never changes, never becomes obsolete.
