The Darkness Holds No Power

Over the years, I have spoken about the power of light and how it overcomes darkness. We have also defined cold not in terms of cold, because it then simply defines itself but rather as the lack of energy to produce heat or simply, the absence of heat. There is a point where cold is absolute, where all energy is absent, but we have not discovered the maximum threshold for heat.

Darkness is the same idea. It cannot be described as dark but rather it is defined as the absence of light. There is a point where there is absolute darkness, that is the total absence of light energy, but there is no defined maximum limit for light.
In John 8:12, Jesus spoke to them saying I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.

There is so much to be said about this single passage. Light, however small, can cut through the darkness like a knife. Even a small ember can take absolute darkness and change its definition. Darkness cannot exist in the presence of light, it can only exists in the complete absence of light. Jesus is the light of the world and in Him is the light of life. Darkness cannot exist in His presence and in that we can rest easy knowing that the promise made in Revelation will be fulfilled. In the end evil is banished forever because the Light of the world rules.

I Am Not Anonymous

I’m sure there has been a time in everyone’s life where we have felt completely anonymous. I don’t know of anything that can hurt the heart more. In our workplace we may come and go and never have a conversation, or be acknowledged by the owner. They can walk by you for days and never make eye contact, yet expect your loyalty. We could be with a group of friends, and be excluded from idle chit chat, and then they wonder why they are not invited to your home. Then there’s the one friend who listens when you speak, but never hear a word, because they’re thinking of what they will say next as their eyes dart around you. All of these are situations that make anyone feel totally invisible. In an instant we are reduced to mute, and that is a tragedy. No one deserves to be treated this way, whether by mistake or intention.

Jesus doesn’t deserve this treatment either. He died for us, all of us. The very least we can do is pay attention to Him. Even we Christians can forget about Him when life is smooth. We slip into the world of, how great am I that I have a good job, money in my pocket, good health, and a few nice toys to play with. Sunday’s come and go, and the lure of the beach and sports on television place church and God on the back burner. All the while, Jesus is with us, every step of the way, speaking His love words in our ear. We don’t hear Him, because we’ve allowed the world to drown Him out, until we hit a wall. Then the first thing we cry out is, “why me Lord, or oh my God”. It’s amazing how we can forget Jesus until it’s convenient. How tragic that we can make even Him, anonymous. He has no ego, yet I’m sure He does have a heart with feelings. Just like us, He is injured when we don’t include Him in our lives, yet He invites us to His house every Sunday. He never takes us for granted, is always waiting in the wings for us to call Him, and He is the one we can all count on to erase our anonymity. Humans may fail us, but Jesus does not. He tells you every day that you are not anonymous. Just turn the world down a bit, and you will hear Him.

I Love You This Much

I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Eph 3:16-19 NIV

Roger Rabbit wrote a love letter to his one and only true love. “How do I love you, let me count the ways…one one thousand, two one thousand three one thousand…” This could go on for as long as there was paper and numbers. The largest defined number in the world is a googolplex, that is a one followed by a hundred zeros. And how big is the universe? Scientists theorize the edge of the universe but they continue to find more every day. Things in life seem to have a boundary but we have breached those boundaries on numerous occasions. A hundred miles an hour was thought out of reach yet we fly beyond the speed of sound, the moon seemed unattainable yet we are planning to go to Mars.

My God created the universe and when the scripture says that I cannot grasp the immensity of God’s love for us and that His love surpasses knowledge, I truly cannot fathom it. Then I think of Romans 5.

God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

While we were still unworthy of even speaking His name, He sent His one and only Son to us. His Son, our Saviour, went to the cross so that every man, woman and child on the face of this earth living then, living now and those still to come, would be forgiven through Christ’s sacrifice. He took my filth upon Himself so that I would know a life everlasting. No matter what I see on the telly, hear in the news, see in the streets, my comfort and joy, the thought that keeps me sane is that one day I will be with my Lord in Heaven and when that happens, then I will understand fully.

Believe It Or Not

Did you know that absolutely everything you read on the internet is the perfect truth? I know, remarkable isn’t it? Did you also know that everything that you read in the entertainment magazines is irrefutable truth? Unbelievable but true! Did you know that the news reports from every single newspaper on this planet is completely true and unbiased? No, really, every one of them confirms this! I can’t believe that anyone would question the integrity or unbiased reporting of our national news broadcasters!

Take some time to become informed and truly look into what is being fed to our nations. If the news being broadcast is the truth, it will stand up to the scrutiny of investigation but this does take effort by the individual to ask questions. Nestled carefully on your shoulders is a magnificent gift called a head and within this wonderful part of the body is a well-protected organ called the brain. There is more going on inside the brain than just monitoring the heart and lungs, there is also the God given talent to think for yourself. When the world spoon-feeds you drivel and tries to keep you from forming your own opinions or question their facts, they are trying to get you to conform to their way of thinking. But to what end? And if you do question, there are those out there who will bully you into shutting up or will chastise you for not sharing their view. Where is the fairness in that?

I am a minister of the Word of God, commissioned by God to present a message and if you do not share my opinion, I am not going to condemn you for your stance but I will ask you to keep an open mind. I have had people start arguments with me, demanding I change my opinion to match theirs but I have a mind, I have an opinion and I have investigated my faith.

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world” 1 John 4:1 NIV

Test all things, not just what you are opposed to but also what you believe. If the world wants the people of faith to question their beliefs then I expect the world to question their own faith – it is only fair, right? God gave us free will and a brain to examine life. God really does not need to prove His existence but He also does not want a bunch of puppets or robots. His message for us, love God and love your neighbours – how you do it is up to you.

Love Thy Neighbor

Each year, our ministry group celebrate February as “Love Thy Neighbor” month. We encourage each other to show a little kindness toward someone. God gives us His two most important commandments in Luke 10:27 NIV, ”Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and love your neighbor as yourself.” Your neighbor is everyone, and anyone, not just the person who lives next door. I read a story about a friend of mine this week being stuck in the snow as he was driving his wife to work. A total stranger stopped, plowed and dug him out, to accept only a handshake for his act of kindness. I also observed another friend, who was storm-stayed from his business, shoveling a neighbors’ driveway, just to help. You see, these are the types of things that God loves to see. They are the actions that show the obedience to this scripture.

Valentines’ day was this week and I’m sure that love was in the air more abundantly than usual. Many, including me, professed love for our mate, and gave thanks for their love in return. Imagine now, if we could just harness that and recycle it every day. It can happen, but it has to start with each of us. Put love out there and I guarantee that God will multiply it and send it back to you. Wouldn’t it be nice to erase the threat of war, the reality of hate, the prejudice of a color, and the disease of intolerance? Wouldn’t it be great to shake a hand in friendship, rather than shake a fist in anger? Isn’t having faith in God a better option than a fight over man made religions? I think so. A friend of mine, who is an atheist, made a wonderful statement this week. He said that everyone deserves peace, and on that, we agreed. He demonstrated to me that even though we are on different ends of the faith spectrum we can still be friends. That dear friends is loving your neighbor. I encourage everyone to love forward. Mend a fence with someone, leave past injuries to heal over, love your neighbor, and reconnect with Jesus. After all, we should remember what He did to show His love for His neighbor. You.

Prayers, Promises, and Praises

I am fairly new at the social media thing. At my age, I never thought I would be using social networking as an everyday tool. I was frozen with fear when I first signed on, yet as time went on I realized that it was merely something new to learn. I tripped my way around and through it, much like new computer programs at my workplace. The more I pushed and learned, the less intimidating the beast was, and now I am perfectly comfortable with it. It was the same way when I was learning how to push past the fear of praying out loud, and for someone when they asked. Dry mouth and stumbling over my words were the order of the day. Yet God pulled me through, kept me plugged in, and filled my mouth with His words, and continues to do this each day.

Social media is a great tool, but is completely useless if we don’t use it. No one can expect to spread a message, communicate their messages, or do business if this tool is not put to uses. Prayer is the same. It is completely ineffective if it’s promised, but not spoken to God. Telling someone you will pray for them, and not following through, is like having a computer, and never turning it on. If Google can put words on a screen, then rest assured, God can and will put words in your mouth.

We are told this in Jeremiah 1:5-10 NCV when the Lord calls Jeremiah and reassures him.” Before I made you in your mother’s womb, I chose you. Before you were born, I set you apart for a special work. I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah replied.” But Lord God, I don’t know how to speak. I am only a boy.” But the Lord said to me, ”Don’t say, ’I am only a boy. ‘You must go everywhere I send you, and you must say everything I tell you to say. Don’t be afraid of anyone, because I am with you to protect you.” Says the Lord. Then the Lord reached out His hand and touched my mouth. He said to me,”See, I am putting my words in your mouth.

The lesson here is, prayers are powerful tools. When they are promised by us and offered, God will fill our mouths, and then, we give Him all the praise and glory, for He will be with us all.

It is Time To Live

This past Sunday, I spoke on proudly proclaiming the Gospels, the Good News, and to do so with the power and strength afforded us by the Armour of God. Put on the Armour of God first thing in the morning and pray. Pray for your family, pray for your government, pray for your pastors, pray for your neighbour regardless of race, religion or creed because we are all God’s children. Do not be afraid to pray for others; lift them up before God. Pray for yourself as well, let Him into the conversation and rejoice that He is a loving and compassionate Father.

It is time to live, to live in the fullness of God. Do not be afraid to thank God for the good things in your life and to ask for help with the challenges. Take hope in His Word:

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,
“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
So we say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Heb 13:5-8

I do not know what tomorrow may bring, I have no power to change the past but, with the Armour of God firmly in place and the Holy Spirit having taken up residence in my heart, I can confidently stand in front of one or a thousand in this moment of time and proudly proclaim that Christ is King!

The Shield and Sword

As a child, I remember the days when I would make a shield out of a pillow and, armed with a cardboard tube from wrapping paper, I would set off to slay my enemy with great fervour. My brother and I would spend hours playing swords and pretend to be some great warrior practicing for battle. Over the course of the battle, one of us would strike the other with great gusto only to have our sword bend and break, usually over the other’s head. This was not a problem as we always had tape available to splint the sword back together and the game would carry on. Over the years, we graduated from pillows and cardboard tubes to branches and garbage can lids. I can still hear my mother “you two be careful…it’s always funny until someone loses an eye!”

Neither of us lost an eye but we did learn that if you wanted to keep from some nasty marks on your arms and torso you always relied on the shield to protect from the onslaught. This is the symbolism of the shield when we speak of the Armour of God. The shield is designed to protect and deflect. When used appropriately the shield could deflect the blow to the side and the bearer would be safe from the onslaught of blows from arrows, stones and swords. As the weapons improved, so did the shields so that the protection would meet or exceed the needs. This is the way it is with the Shield of protection. The more that is thrown our way, the larger and more secure the protection. The more we lean on God for our protection, the more we trust in His ways, the larger we realize His scope of protection. We can also be assured that the more passionate we become in delivering His message, the more the enemy is going to take note and the more he will throw our way but His was is infinitely more powerful than anything the enemy can even dream.

With the shield of faith, the sandals of readiness, the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness and the belt of truth all in place, we are now prepared to push forward with the one piece of kit that is meant to not only defend but also to fight with; the Sword of the Spirit that is the Word of God. His word is strong and perfect. His word is to be laid out before all mankind so that the nation will know the true message; God is King! This Sunday, we are going to look at the fullness of the Armour of God and how He is with us whether we understand it or not. Until then, remember to put on the full armour and go confidently into the world knowing that His protection is perfect.

The Power Of Prayer

How amazing is the power of prayer? I have been privy to friends and acquaintances this week where prayer was just as palatable as a fine dinner with friends. The wide range of health, financial and emotional challenges are as varied as you can imagine. For me, a wave of prayer power seemed to have a volume all it’s own since last week some time. Our service last Sunday was completely taken over by Holy Spirit, as it should be. Yet this was different. Many came to have prayer for themselves yes, but many more were standing for someone who couldn’t. That was so powerful.

Our country right now is praying in unison for the victims of an individual who thought it appropriate to attack and kill them while they prayed. The unprovoked attack on a mosque where people of the Muslim faith gathered, is Satan’s way of keeping the hate engine running. The fear mongering in the United States and yes in Canada, is a tool the devil is using to keep us distracted and away from God. Prayer on a global scale is the best weapon we have, so let‘s use it. My friends who are ill and in the hospital feel the power of our prayers as it pushes back the fear of their own struggle. It keeps their mind focussed on Jesus, where it needs to be to heal. One of these friends, even through their own situation, shared this. She said, “if we could harness all the prayers from yesterday, maybe we could fill all the churches on Sunday”. That was such a powerful testimony of faith in her friends, and in God’s healing power. Psalm 86:5 TLB reads this way. O Lord, You are so good and kind, so ready to forgive, so full of mercy for all who ask your aid.

What I have seen this week at the hands of God plays perfectly into this scripture. We all must ask for God’s aid. That is called a prayer, and it can only be effective if it’s spoken, either by voice or by heart. Prayer fits everyone, regardless if it’s across our borders, across the county, across the room, or across the table. Read Psalm 4:1 every day this week, and let God take over from there. Let’s harness the power of prayer, because Lord knows we all need it.
