Prayer, One Size Fits All

I have learned how prayer fits everyone. It truly is a wonderful tool and the greatest of weapons when facing any enemy of any size or description. It could be a phone call from a loved one who is frightened by a health issue, a friend dealing with a loss so close that their breath is crippled, a Pastor or leadership member going through a dry spell or injury who, for a time, loses the strength or ability to pray. When we come along side and pray for someone, we are their advocate to the Father. We need no experience or training, as God will always fill our mouths and hearts with the words of comfort when we are obedient to His call.

If you can pray out loud, do so, and if you cannot, use your heart, as God will hear it just the same. As individuals, we pray in our own language. That is, prayer that has no established formula or structure. We simply invite Jesus into our heart and speak with Him. He cares not about polished rehearsals or catch phrases. He knows your heart when you speak as you would with your fishing or hunting buddy. He is available at a moment’s notice to let you vent, to let you cry, to let you confess and to let you change. When you need Him most He will make Himself known to you. For all these things, pray thanks to Jesus. Whatever you pray, please know that it will fit. It always does. Unlike man made items, prayer of any size truly does fit all. Now that you know this, offer one to every one you meet and offer one to Jesus for someone who needs it but doesn't know how to ask.

Believe in its power for those who don't. Speak it, when others cannot. Then thank Father God for listening. Continue to pray for Canada as we celebrate yet another Canada Day, and also remember our friends and neighbors among us who are from, and in the United States as they prepare to celebrate their Independence Day next week.

God's Abundance

The Perfect 7-day Diet – Peter’s Picks
‘God’s Abundance’
Day 1: John 10:10“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”
Day 2: 1 John 5:14, 15“And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for. "
Day 3: Mark 11:24 – “I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.”
Day 4: Deuteronomy 28:12“The Lord will send rain at the proper time from his rich treasury in the heavens and will bless all the work you do. You will lend to many nations, but you will never need to borrow from them.”
Day 5: Luke 6:38“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full-pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”
Day 6: Psalm 36:8 – “You feed them from the abundance of your own house, letting them drink from your river of delights."
Day 7: Ephesians 3:20 – “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.”

I Forget

I walked out the door today for the third time without my keys and this is not the first time I have done so. As I grow older I find myself forgetting things from time to time, actually the period between the forgetful sessions seems to be getting shorter, almost like these bouts are trying to link up and make one big forgetful moment. Okay, maybe it’s not that bad but when you are in the middle of these little episodes, it seems like they are more numerous than before.

We have started a series of forgiveness but it would be wrong of me if I did not mention that true forgiveness means not only forgiving in more than just word but it also means forgetting it, leaving it in the past. There are times when some will say “I forgive you” only to rehash it in an argument months or years later. This is the demise of many relationships and friendships. How many of us have done stupid things in the past that we wish people would forget about and yet when we are wronged sometimes we hold it over other’s heads?  How many times must I forgive? More times than you can count!

It was also noted that God is perfect so how can He, the perfect Creator, forget since forgetfulness is not considered perfect. Again, my mentor mentioned that maybe He does not forget but rather chooses that which He wants to remember. I choose to believe that my perfect Father in Heaven forgives perfectly and chooses to leave my past in the past. Is this how I live my life? Is this what I preach and encourage of others?

This Sunday we look at forgiveness and new starts.

Blessings all!

Our Father Knows Best

Welcome everyone as I introduce you to my new bi-weekly column “Our Father Knows Best”. For the past five years, I have been submitting a weekly message of encouragement, or “photograph” if you will, of how God makes His presence known to us every day.   Thank you for the opportunity to continue sharing how God is alive and well in us, and how He remains ever present with us, even when we are unaware.

God is real. He is alive, loving, patient, forgiving and He wants everything that is good for all of us. Times have changed over the years and not for the best. There was a time when prayer was part of society’s daily routine and Sunday was truly a day of rest to spend thankful time with Jesus. As mankind and technology seemingly advances, God is being ushered to the sidelines. His importance and, unfortunately, even His very existence are being denied.
.
That being said, there is hope. God is bigger than any of these issues. He always makes a way for His message or His Word to reach all of us. He uses the media of this publication either in print or on-line. He gave the tool of social media to the world knowing full well the power of communication. Many will use these to deny Him yet He cannot be silenced. Man may close a window but Jesus will just open a door. God still owns the world. Psalm 24:1 tells us this; “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world and all who live in it” NIV. He prompts ordinary people like you and me to keep telling the world that there is hope in Him.

When we show the world the face of Jesus by how we treat each other in love, then eventually even those who say they don’t believe will come to know Him. Those who are estranged from Him will come back to Him and those who think they are not worthy of His love and grace, will accept Him. God has given us two commandments, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind and love your neighbour as yourself” Matthew 22:37-39 NIV. Let’s all try this starting today, after all, our Father really does know best.

Forgiveness Is More Than Words

A child has been told on more than one occasion that hitting is not right and hurts. One afternoon, the little girl’s mother saw her hit another child and went out to confront her. The mother scolded her child and told her to apologize. The little girl knew that she would suffer even more dire consequences if she did not apologize so she walked up to the other girl and flippantly said sorry. The mother did not see the forgiveness in the words nor the sincerity in the apology and told her daughter to try again. Once again the young girl asked forgiveness with the flourish of the appropriate gestures, the down-turned eyes and clasped hands, and, once again, the mother did not see the truth in the gesture.

“What are you sorry for?”
“Hitting my friend.”
“How would you feel if she had hit you?”
“Really bad.”
“Are you truly sorry for hurting her?”
“Yes mommy.”
“Then let her know just how sorry you are.”

So often the apologies are just lip service and not from the essence of our hearts. It can almost seem like the act of forgiveness is court ordered and the asking a mandatory requirement. It’s hard to forgive another when the other person just throws out the words without really understanding what they are apologizing for.

Father, forgive me my sins. Forgive me my trespasses as I forgive others their trespasses against me. Paying lip service to these words, praying them without truly grasping them to our hearts, speaking the words without living the words is truly a hazardous venture.  Forgive me Father as I forgive those who do me ill will. I can forgive my so called friend for what he did to me but only if he comes to me and asks forgiveness and makes amends. God forgive me – would you want the Lord to say yes, no problem or would you have Him say well, okay BUT there are some things you need to do before I can really forgive you. His grace is perfect and His forgiveness is truly wonderful. Does our community forgive like Jesus or do we place conditions? Is our faith more than the words spoken?

This Sunday we look at forgiveness and also forgetting.
May you be blessed richly in the love of God this coming week.

Happy Father's Day God

Father’s Day, one day each where we are supposed to stop or at least slow down to honor our dads or a dad figure in our lives. Oh yes, the traditional gifts of ties, mugs and other little gestures to show our appreciation for dad’s place in our homes will all be given. These are all fine and, as a dad, I’ve always loved these things from my children.

When we think of God, our heavenly Father, how are we supposed to honor Him? We have never met Him face to face although we see His presence if we look closely. Unlike our earth fathers, we don’t really know what His voice sounds like although He does speak to us every day. We honor a daddy God, whom we’ve never met, by believing in His Son, Jesus. We allow Him into our hearts each day through trails and triumphs. We read His book with friends so the words and the Word become a part of our daily existence. We laugh, cry and pray with Him always and are never alone, even in a crowd when we speak His name. We honor Him by loving our earth fathers and by being loving fathers ourselves. Let today be the day that we all slow down and allow that breath you catch to be the one that says, Father God, Happy Father’s Day from me, a child of the King.

Did You Ever Think?

Okay, I am a bit older and remember a bunch of shows that many might not. Those shows were quite flattering to the father figure. In “Leave It To Beaver”, Ward was a wise father that had no problem with his role and was rarely made fun of in his position as head of the household. The same can be said for Steven Douglas from “My Three Sons” and Mike Brady from “The Brady Bunch”. The father figure was a position of respect and wisdom and he was considered to be the head of the household. I can tell you, my father called his father “Dad” his entire life and I would never think of calling my dad by his first name (truth be told I did once… and only once).

I watch shows today and it seems like the father is the butt of all the jokes and is viewed as the bumbling fool and dullard of the relationship. As time goes by and the demise of the family unit grows increasingly more common, one thing stands out for me; the father is not portrayed as the strong head of the household. Why is it that the strong father figure is being degraded by the media? All I can think of is that the father of the house is the head of household. According to Paul’s letter to the Ephesians:

Wives, understand and support your husbands in ways that show your support for Christ. The husband provides leadership to his wife the way Christ does to his church, not by domineering but by cherishing. So just as the church submits to Christ as he exercises such leadership, wives should likewise submit to their husbands. Eph 5:22-24 Msg

This Sunday we celebrate the strong father, the caring father, the Godly father. A father will love his wife and family with the passion that God loves the church. He will raise them up in the Word and will lead by example and the family will respect the responsibility bestowed upon him. There is unity in the family when God is at the center and the family loves together.

Brokeness

The Perfect 7-day Diet – Peter’s Picks
‘Brokenness’
Day 1: Isaiah 57:15“The high and lofty one who lives in eternity, the Holy One, says this: ‘I live in the high and holy place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. I restore the crushed spirit of the humble and revive the courage of those with repentant hearts.’”
Day 2: Psalm 51:16, 17“You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God."
Day 3: 2 Corinthians 3:4-6 – “We are confident of all this because of our great trust in God through Christ. It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God. He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant. This is a covenant not of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old written covenant ends in death; but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life.”
Day 4: 1 Hosea 10:12“I said, ‘Plant the good seeds of righteousness, and you will harvest a crop of love. Plow up the hard ground of your hearts, for now is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and shower righteousness upon you.’”
Day 5: 2 Corinthians 12:9, 10“Each time he said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
Day 6: Isaiah 66:2 – “My hands have made both heaven and earth; they and everything in them are mine. I, the Lord, have spoken! ‘I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts, who tremble at my word.’"
Day 7: Joel 2:13 – “’Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.’ Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.”

God, Is That You, or Me?

Have you ever wondered if God is speaking to you, or if what you hear is your own voice of wanting inside your head? I have, many times. I listen, and when anything feels remotely human, I know it’s not of God. If what you hear is negative toward a family member, a friend, a church group, or someone in your church gathering, it’s not God’s voice. If you feel and hear forgiveness, charity, lifting up, sharing, then you know it’s Jesus. Daily static and your own situation can cloud your judgement, yet be assured Jesus does not tear down, He builds up. He never criticizes, He edifies. He never condemns, He comforts.

Church bodies everywhere are under attack from Satan. He begins with the leadership teams, trying to divide, then conquer. We, in the human and on our own, cannot fight him, but our Father God can. He asks that we take the threat to Him, then He will battle our enemy. Satan knows that he is defeated, as scripture assures us of that. Yet, he will try to take as many down with him as he can. Recognize his threat by listening with your heart. Neutralize the threat, by turning to the Father. You will know God’s voice when you hear it. It’s the one that says, I love you my child.

Overcoming

The Perfect 7-day Diet – Peter’s Picks
‘Overcoming’
Day 1: 2 Timothy 2:23, 24“Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people.”
Day 2: James 1:19-21“Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls."
Day 3: Proverbs 17:27 – “A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered.”
Day 4: 1 Corinthians 13:4, 5“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.”
Day 5: Romans 12:1, 2“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice – the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.  Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
Day 6: James 1:2-4 – “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing."
Day 7: Isaiah 41:13 – “For I hold you by your right hand – I, the Lord your God. And I say to you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you.’”
** Verses taken from the NLT.

So What Do You Believe In?

I could start by quoting the Apostle Creed or the Articles of Faith but do the words from others truly describe what I believe? These are the words of other men and women to describe what they believe to be the all-encompassing truth of the Word but it is someone else’s idea? So what do I believe in?

Let us start with the Word of God.

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Matthew 16:13-16

This is a HUGE declaration considering that, in that time, uttering allowed that Jesus is the Messiah was a death sentence but to understand this was also a massive leap of faith; God with us!!! Isaiah spoke of the coming of the Messiah, the Prince of peace, God sending His grace to dwell with mankind. Peter declared Jesus to be the Son of God and, in a letter to the Romans, Paul, one time hunter of those who declared Jesus as the Son of God, prompted others to declare their faith in Christ!

…“The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. Romans 10:8-10

I believe Jesus is the Son of God, Saviour of all mankind and, by believing in His sacrifice for me, I will live in His presence forever. Death has no hold over my life and every day is a gift and a joy. I will praise His name from the mountain top and declare His love for all mankind in the best of times and in the hardest of times. I believe that this life is just a precursor for something much better to come but until that time, I live life for my community and for my God.

This Sunday, we will look at Romans 10 and taking note of the hope and joy in knowing our wonderful Creator.

Blessings

Just A Closer Walk

I was listening to Canton Junction sing this wonderful old Hymn and, after listening to the words, I went onto the web to find the lyrics for further reflection.

Just a Closer Walk with Thee | Anonymous/Unknown
I am weak, but Thou art strong; Jesus, keep me from all wrong; I’ll be satisfied as long as I walk, let me walk close to Thee.

Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Through this world of toil and snares, if I falter, Lord, who cares? Who with me my burden shares? None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee.

When my feeble life is o’er, time for me will be no more; Guide me gently, safely o’er to Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.

There are times in our lives when the burdens become just too great and our coping methods seem to fall short. We hit the bookstore for the latest DIY fix-me-up books, turn to online TV gurus who are selling the latest and greatest potions and cures for the trending issues of the day or, turn to the old standbys; the bottle, drugs or the any other distraction. I look up to the mountains and ask where does my help come from and the world tells us exactly where we can go for temporary relief. The relief for these sources lasts only as long as the money lasts to buy the fleeting happiness…but where does my help come from, my infinite and perfect help?

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. Ps 121:1-2 NIV

I know I am weak but my God is strong. He walks close to me and when I falter, He is there. To rely on Do It Yourself is to rely on a finite person who has boundaries but to recognize that I am feeble and He is strong, that He shares my burdens reminds me that He is the Infinite Creator! He is my guide in life and my guide to the Kingdom…daily I walk with Thee! Praise God!

This Sunday, we look to 2 Corinthians 13:1-10 as it applies to our lives and the life of His church.

Blessings

Pastor Todd

Commitment

The Perfect 7-day Diet – Peter’s Picks
‘Commitment’
Day 1: 1 Corinthians 1:10 – “I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.”
Day 2: 1 Peter 5:5 – “In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’"
Day 3: Acts 20:28 – “So guard yourselves and God’s people. Feed and shepherd God’s flock – his church, purchased with his own blood – over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as leaders”
Day 4: 1 Thessalonians 5:12, 13 – “Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders in the Lord’s work. They work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance. Show them great respect and wholehearted love because of their work. And live peacefully with each other.”
Day 5: Hebrews 10:24, 25 – “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.”
Day 6: Colossians 3:13, 14 – “Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony."
Day 7: 1 Peter 3:8 – “Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.”

God Listens and Delivers

Did you know that God showed up today, yesterday, and the day before that? He shows up every day, but perhaps you were kept too busy to recognize His presence. Don’t feel bad, you’re not alone. Perhaps I will jog your memory with a few examples. You woke up breathing this morning. Was it a sigh of regret, or a sigh of relief and thanks? Could you hug your wife or husband? Did your family and friends wish you a happy birthday? Did you get moved to the front of the line with a medical appointment? Did someone tell you they loved you, and did you tell them you loved them back? Did you hear your kids’ or your mother’s voice? If you answered yes to any of these, know that someone prayed for you and God, as usual, listened, and delivered.

The Lord tells us,” I love those who love Me, and those who seek Me will find Me.” Proverbs 8:17 NIV.  “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13 NIV. These scriptures very clearly tell us to look for God in everything, each day. My encouragement is to try this today, then tomorrow enjoy the gift of realizing that Jesus carries you, when you cannot carry yourself. Watch how He shows up, day after day.
