For The Nations

𝗖𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗗-𝟭𝟵 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀:
Pray for wisdom for the leaders of your countries, states or provinces, and cities. Ask God to give them good counsel and wise discernment to know what is needed to protect their citizens. Pray for other countries besides your own that may be faced with difficult and complex situations unlike what you are experiencing. Every region of the world is seeking to weather the pandemic.

Where The Truth Lives.

I long for the days of Lloyd Robertson, Walter Cronkite and Harvey Kirck. These were the days when the news was reported, personal opinion rarely made it into the reporting and both sides got a chance to voice their opinion. My grandfather used to say there were three sides to every story; yours, mine and the right one. We can all look at the same picture and see something completely different. I walked into a home a while ago and noticed the explosion of colour on the refrigerator. From a ways off it just looked like a huge mess, papers hanging onto the door for dear life held on with a tiny magnet, colours that should never be placed together and globs that had dried in place mid-drip. It looked as if this were the remnants of an explosion in a paint factory but for the family it was art and who was I to argue. The artist took the time to walk me through the paintings and suddenly horses and cows, rainbows and sunrises sprang forth from the chaos. Over the years, the artist continued to draw and paint, many would offer suggestions and wisdom to the young artist, some he embraced and some were filed for later times, and his work transformed and grew. Even the negative help to shape his work and today he is a magnificent artist, not to say that he was not before.

The news today is filled with an almost hysterical flavour of doom and gloom. Out of this comes arguments of “it could be worse” (which it could) to “avoid all contact with the world” (which would solve the issue). Both sides have valid points to make but somewhere in the middle is the answer. There will always be those who think they are completely correct and they will argue the point to the end. Some do so by defying the suggestions and input and believe that what they see is just fine, “don’t infringe on my rights, quit talking down to me”. Truth be told, you shame me and I will dig in my heels, its human nature. On the other side of the equation comes lines such as “are you stupid, your going to kill us all, you are so selfish, the world is coming to an end”.  Somewhere in the middle is the truth and it is the truth that will set us free from the bonds of this stress.

Let’s look at the pictures on the fridge with new lenses. I see the depth of the angst in the colours of the perceptions. There is the need for self-protection and the need for protecting our families. But let us consider this, we are all God’s family so why not take it upon ourselves to seek out ways to keep all our neighbours safe. By limiting my time outside my home, I am protecting those of my community and I am being responsible to my family. Yes, you may feel you are impervious to the virus but if you get it, are you willing to accept the responsibility of spreading it? I have two dear friends that have closed their restaurants for dining in. I miss them dearly but love them for caring for their neighbours, their friends.

Yes, this is a terrible time and the news loves to blast us with the negatives. Daily one-sided conversations and stories saying the exact same thing over and over. I do understand the magnitude of the situation but there is another side we don’t see on the news. The pollution over our major cities is lessening, the canals in Venice are running clear, families posting goofy videos of dancing around to weird songs on Facebook, kids getting to know their parents, parents getting to know their kids. Forced time out is leading to time spent with family. I watch the news and what I don’t hear is the constant battle of our leaders and the opposition yelling back and forth about nonsense but rather I hear we must work together. In the darkest hour, we need to seek the Light. There are numerous good news stories out there, we need to seek them out. At a time when the media outlets seek to report for ratings and sensationalism, let us live our lives in search of the relationships that God wants us to find and grow, in that we will find the beauty within the chaos on the fridge door.

Main Avenue Fellowship will be having services this Sunday BUT it will only be available online. The Value Of Loss

Well to say these past few weeks have been a rollercoaster ride would be an understatement. With coronavirus dominating all news reports, it is easy to forget about a lot of things. The list of things either  set aside, cancelled or postponed is endless. We went from warnings to pandemic in the blink of an eye. We went from daily reports of expanding wildfires in Australia and California to a spreading deadly virus around the globe. Who knew that something so microscopic could shut our planet down in a matter of weeks?  Social media, which can and has fueled fear, doubt and misinformation, has suddenly become a most useful tool and ally.

With the order across our country to isolate and practice physical distancing being the new normal, we have lost something very precious. The simple handshake or hug for our friends has for a time, slipped from our grasp. What we have taken for granted in the past is now behind Plexiglas barriers and surgical masks. That is the human contact through touch and speech. The threat is real and so is the human fear. Perhaps God is hitting a reset button of sorts. He is not a God of making or allowing His children to suffer, yet, He has put in place the ways and means to get us through this. We just haven’t discovered that yet.

This Covid19 will cause many to test their faith, scream their fears, and realize the value of face to face contact. When one or more of these is tested or taken away, we will rediscover the value in what was lost. Even the people who denied and crucified Christ soon realized what was lost when He was taken away. This pandemic will be conquered by our scientists and doctors. Then and only then will we know the true meaning of loss. When our fundamental freedoms are restored we will realize how important it is to love and care for each other. Only when our economies begin to rebound will we know the true value of our employment. Only when we gather again for church services, school classes and hockey games will we know how precious our freedom is.

Just like these things, only when Jesus comes back will we truly know what was lost when He was crucified. Today I encourage everyone to honor our government by adhering to their direction and orders. We have an advantage to learn from history, and not repeat it. This crisis will pass, and when it does, I hope more people will see how the Father carried us when we were too weak to breathe.

Are We Light In A Time Of Darkness?

I am watching the news and the think I notice the most is, in all the graphics, as the virus that has the world on edge infiltrates a county or area, the light background goes dark, usually a blood red. The bar graphs are similar in choice of colouring but there is another item of note, the recovery rates on most bar graphs I have seen is a brilliant blue. As the world begins to wrestle with the darkness of disease and despair, there is hope, a light on the other side of the conflict. We have shut down all events in the church to minimize the chance of spreading the virus. I was rather worried about not gathering with the faith family in the church but then I remembered that we believe the church is the family of faith and not the building. We have strong relationships and have built the foundation of our gathering on personal relationship rather than on bricks and mortar. The building is temporary but the relationship we have with each other and with our Lord and Saviour is eternal. The virus eventually will be eliminated and the light will prevail, focus on the Light.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

Do not let the fact that your church has to close to help others, rather take joy knowing that there are other alternatives available to you and your faith family to pour into the lives of those in your community. We are a family of our Father in Heaven. To build relationship, we must learn to communicate and in order to do that, we need to commit to prayer. Family of faith, take time often each day to pray for family, friends and our nations. Pray for your leaders whether you voted for them or not. Don’t hold back, pray often and with all your being. Be the light of the community especially in times when the darkness starts to invade. Daniel prayed with his doors wide open which was very dangerous because others were able to see him defy the orders of the king. In the end, however, the light of the Lord shone through and many saw the love in that relationship. Let the light shine out, be His representative in these times of need.

Hope to see you Sunday online.

Important Announcement

The following information was received from our District Superintendent Rev. Rose Brower-Young on March 16.2020. We completely respect and support the hard decision our leadership had to make in this time of great need.
_________________________________________________

To our church pastors, leaders, families, and friends:
The word ‘unprecedented’ has been used to describe the daily evolving global uncertainty we are facing regarding the novel coronavirus COVID-19 and its impact on our people.
As those whose purpose is to live a life that reflects Christ-like love, I believe we have been given an incredible opportunity to offer hope and to provide ministry to communities that are desperately looking for peace and comfort.

I (District Superintendent) participated in a meeting today that was attended by all our Canadian District Superintendents and the National Director. The following statement has been unanimously adopted:
We, the leadership of the Churches of the Nazarene in Canada, declare immediate suspension of all “in-person” services and gatherings until further notice.

As churches, we must do our part to slow down the transmission of the coronavirus and protect the vulnerable and compromised who are at most risk of being unable to overcome the virus. Today’s reports show the virus can linger anywhere between 24 hours – 4 days on a surface. We must do all we can to help prevent the spread any further than it already has.

… I (District Superintendent) am certain you will be receiving further emails in the coming days from our office. We will try and respond to follow-up questions and offer you support as you provide pastoral care and leadership in your community.
Please keep in touch with us and with one another. I (District Superintendent) am praying for you and your ministry.

Grateful for you,
Rev. Rose Brower-Young
District Superintendent,
Canada West District Church of the Nazarene

We will not, however, be having in-house services or Bible studies until further notice.

We invite you to join us online Sunday @ 10:30 MST on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MainAvenueFellowship/ ) or view it afterwards on our website (www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.ca).

It’s Not You, It’s Me

Watching a show the other day and I heard the actor say “when someone says to you ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ it is definitely you”. There is so much out in the world that is causing us to question, “Is it me or is the world gone crazy?” What exactly does hoarding toilet paper have to do with this new virus? The reason I ask this; I have on numerous occasion thought I must be crazy because I have no idea what toilet paper and this virus have in common. Think about it, if I have a virus that is related to pneumonia, I suggest that we should be stocking up on facial tissues rather than bottom fluff. I am more concerned that my nose is leaking and not my gluteus maximus. So, ergo, I am suggesting to the population who are obsessed with bottom cleansing disposable wipers, it’s not you, it’s me (see aforementioned explanation for clarification of sarcasm).

Now, let’s look at another one of my perplexing conundrum. So many are in such a hurry they do not take the time to slow down and enjoy what God has provided. Before anyone says “hello, pot, kettle, black”, I never said I was perfect but I am working on it (see sanctification). To quote one of my great mentors “I’m a man, but I can change, if I have to, I guess”. Let’s break the thought of rest into its earliest definition. In Genesis, God created all things in six days and then stated in Genesis 2the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. God then commanded all His creation to keep the Sabbath holy and to rest. Scientists say that a minimum of one day rest in seven helps us to stay healthy, God says keep one day of rest holy but so many disregard this and pack the week to the max. Families suffer, health suffers and society suffers as we continue to push past the limits. Once again I say; it’s not you, it’s me. I have apologized to so many from my past for my inability to stop and take time for them. I failed but I have learned and am learning. Take time for those you love. God, family and friends are, in my opinion, more important than chasing after more “stuff”. It is me who decides priorities – I choose relationship over stuff, what will you decide?

We invite you to join us if you can at 10:30 MST on Sunday or watch live online on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MainAvenueFellowship/ ) or view it afterwards on our website (www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.ca). See you all Sunday.

The Perfect 7-day Diet – Peter’s Picks
‘We All Need God’s Grace’
Day 1: Romans 3:23, 24 – “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.”
Day 2: Ephesians 2:8, 9 – “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.”
Day 3: 2 Chronicles 30:9 – “For if you return to the Lord, your relatives and your children will be treated mercifully by their captors, and they will be able to return to this land. For the Lord your God is gracious and merciful. If you return to him, he will not continue to turn his face from you.”
Day 4: 2 Timothy 1:9 – “For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time – to show us his grace through Christ Jesus.”
Day 5: Isaiah 30:18 – “So the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for his help.”
Day 6: Titus 2:11, 12 – “For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people.  And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God…”
Day 7: Hebrews 4:16 – “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”

What A Glorious Day That Will Be

Each month, myself and other members of our ministry worship team visit a local seniors’ care facility. We bring a banquet of Gospel songs and spend time with our friends there. Regardless if the songs are traditional or contemporary, there is one constant. That constant is God’s message of love and salvation. We sing of His amazing grace, and acknowledge that what we have has been paid in full at the cross. The songs tell stories of how great our God is, and reaffirm His peace in our valleys and the view from the mountain top.

We have come to know our friends, not so much by their names, but by their faces as we see how God causes them to revisit a good time in their life. We see how He transforms aged bodies into young spirits as they go back in time with the lyrics of the prayers of days gone by. This effect warms the hearts of us that go and share His praises. He returns them to their youth if only for a few minutes. Forlorn faces become glowing smiles and tapping feet as they sing with us note for note, and word for word. The memories and promises of the songs allow each of them to rest and sleep in God’s peace.

Many of these friends’ who are in their eighties, were no doubt instrumental in raising many of the church buildings and congregations we know today. Many served on church boards, and in our armed forces. Some are widows and widowers who are alone, yet surrounded by friends. The common denominator is their love and faith for the Lord.

Who else but Father God could cause such an effect like this? Who else but Jesus could make such an impression on them with this power? Who else but Holy Spirit would be as faithful as to remain within them every minute of every day, of every year? No one. Deuteronomy 31:8 NKLV promises this.” And the Lord, He is the one who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed”. We see this belief in this promise, each time we visit our friends. They are the elderly, not alone, and not forgotten. Their experience in keeping the faith speaks volumes to those of us who now follow. We should all take notes from these great teachers. Let Jesus cause the same in us, allowing His everlasting effect to remain. Someday we will sit and listen to a visiting worship team, and be taken back in time. What a day, glorious day that will be.

Just Breathe

While chatting with a co-worker this week, about all the different threats in the world, we just had to stop and breathe. If we hang onto every post on social media, watch the depressing news each night, then pile onto ourselves our own ails and woes, we may just stop breathing. Every day we are bombarded with images of injustice, protests, violence, corruption, and yes the latest pandemic. Our need for speed with technology has made us addicts to the gloom of our world. We are being so distracted by all of this that drawing a breath is like sleeping with a rock on our chests. Just breathe.

Now I’m not saying to stick our heads in the sand, but what I am suggesting is that we take a step back from our screens, allow ourselves to decompress, and breathe. Take back time with our families and friends, face to face, not Facebook to Facebook. Pay attention to the world, but not be consumed by it. The latest virus, Covid19 is something to be aware of, yet we can use common sense to combat the fear. I admit to having a human fear, or concern with this invisible threat. I am trying to lean on my faith that God will protect me and my family, yet we have to take responsibility for our own well-being, and for those around us. It has to start with owning our personal hygiene practices, staying informed, and yes, relying on our faith that God will guide us and carry us.

We need to first undo the fear that has a grip on us. Once we do this, then we can breathe, once we can breathe, then we can concentrate on the human and physical. So, let’s start with prayer. Pray for strength and resolve. Pray for increase in faith, belief in God’s healing, and clarity of mind. Lean on His promise that He will watch over and protect us. He tells us this in Isaiah 41:10 NCV” So don’t worry, because I am with you. Don’t be afraid because I am your God. I will make you strong and will help you; I will support you with my right hand that saves you.” God has promised good to us as in Jeremiah. Yet he does not give us permission to throw caution to the wind. He has given us the gift of free will to use our minds to discern when to help ourselves. That time is now. Lean into Him, wash your hands and just breathe.

Do I Believe In The Salvation Message?

Have you ever heard this one before? “How can I believe in something or someone I can’t see?” There are numerous people out there who do not want to believe in God because they feel the need for something to be tangible before they can put their faith in it. “If I can’t see it, touch it or understand it, I am not sure I can buy into it.” This is an ideal that I, personally, can’t wrap my head around. So let’s be silly for a moment. We cannot see air yet without the air around us we would die. Can you use it? Can you feel it? Yet without it, we could not survive. Okay, let’s try another one. Can we see an electron? The atom is made up of protons, neutrons and electrons but we can’t see electrons but consider this, if we don’t have electrons, the atom would be missing an integral part of its make-up and could not exist. Sean Craft noted in a 2016 article in Quora “…seeing something is not required to determine its properties, in fact many properties cannot be understood simply by processing the light that bounces off of an object.” So with that thought in mind, we don’t have to see to believe.

Now I make a case for Christ. Jesus lived and His life was recorded in more than one place. He fulfilled prophecies that not many would want to lay claim to. He would be persecuted and mocked and in the end He would die so that others would live. He touched people and they touched Him. I am not sure if anyone has been investigated as much as our Saviour and yet people still say since they have not seen Him, they do not believe. The logic just does not compute with me. I recently read an article by researchers that noted the earth may have been completely covered by water. We have known this for centuries.

And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. Gen 1:9-10

We did not see this happen, yet it did and we are proving it, empirically. Let’s face it, there will still be the Doubting Thomas’ out there who need proof. “I will believe if I can put my finger in the holes made by the nails.”

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Mine is not a blind faith, there is more than enough proof to declare the truth. I would caution people not to be caught up in a blind denial due to a lack of knowledge and understanding. God forgives but He also demands that we declare Christ as King and Saviour.

We invite you to join us if you can at 10:30 MST on Sunday or watch live online on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MainAvenueFellowship/ ) or view it afterwards on our website (www.mainavefellowship.blogspot.ca). See you all Sunday.
